    Consequence of turnings off the pc while updating windows 10


    My computer was turned off during an update. It starts normally, has a prompt at the bottom that says, "attempting to recover installation" for a split second followed by, "undoing changes to your computer ." Then immediately restarts and does that cycle over and over. Not sure what to do.

    Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

    Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    Hi Mark,

    I realize that you want to know the consequences of turning off the pc while updating Windows 10. I will try to help you with this issue.

    The security update updates a DLL that is loaded in one or more processes that are required by Windows. If the computer is restarted abruptly then the dll file is not updated. Some core system files and settings would not be updated if the PC
    restarts in between and as a result of this some files might be broken, damaged or corrupt.

    Restarting/shutting down in the middle of an update installation may cause serious damage to the PC.

    If the PC shuts down due to power failure then wait for some time and then restart the computer to try installing those updates one more time.

    Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

    Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

    I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.
