Consistency between users and Users folders

    I am running W10 Pro x64 1511.

The laptop came with a default account for USER, so the underlying subfolders of Users are in users\USER\.
For various reasons I wanted to have them under my name i.e., users\FP\. So I added another admin user FP with which I login. However, no users\FP\ folder was created and the information is still stored in users\USER\.

Any idea why and how I could get the system to create the FP users folder and store the information there?

    Thanks.

    :)

Windows 10 destop icon settings on a multi user computer not consistently saved

I have a Windows 10 Pro computer with multiple local user accounts that have separate desktop icons and desktop icon settings. The computer was upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro. The problem I have is that the desktop icon settings for the
arrangement of the desktop icons is not being consistently saved between user switching, logoff and reboots of the computer. I also have intermittent occurrences of a desktop.ini file being saved in the Desktop sub folder of Users on the C drive for users
when they log off or the computer is switched between users or the computer is rebooted when multi users are logged on to the computer. Is there something I can do to keep this from occurring?

How did you add the second admin account?

Well: I managed to rename the default user account and create a new user ac
count and make it Admin. However, no new folder was created under \users.

I rebooted, but was not offered 2 login users. I logged in with the default then logged off. Then I was offered 2 login options, but I tried to login as the new user, I got "could not load profile".

And, in fact, I wondered about that: even had the folder been created, would it have been associated with all the subfolders under the default user folder -- isn't that the profile?

When you create a new account, a corresponding folder under Users is supposed to be created for it. My account is John under Users/John. My wife's account is Lori, under Users/Lori. If you create a new account using a Microsoft Login, you'll get the first few letters of the Microsoft login under Users such as johnmh.

There is something wrong with your installation of Windows.

Yes, I know that's what should have happened. But it did not.

The laptop came with the W10 pre-installed, so how can I tell if something is wrong and what?

There don't have to be anything else wrong with your Windows, just a bit messed up user accounts. The below instructions will work and are an easy and fast way to let you do a clean start allowing you to create a fresh new local admin account for yourself and remove the account User as well as other unnecessary or malfunctioning user accounts.

Please do as told below following the instructions exactly as written, not adding / changing anything, not forgetting a single step. The whole process takes just a few minutes.

To start with, use whatever account / user you are able to use to sign in and enter Windows desktop.

1.) When on desktop, right click the Start button and select Run:

2.) Type the following in Run dialog, click OK when done: %windir%\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe:

3.) Windows System Preparation Tool dialog opens. Check that it shows these selections (numbers correspond to those in screenshot):1. System Cleanup Action: Enter System Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE)
    2. Generalize: not selected
    3. Shutdown Options: Reboot

4.) Now click OK. The Windows System Preparation Tool runs and Windows will restart:

5.) Windows will perform a so called First Run setup, an OOBE boot. In first dialog select your region, language, keyboard layout and time zone if not already correctly shown, click Next:

6.) Do not enter any product key, your Windows is already activated. Instead select Do this later:

    7.) Accept the license agreement:

8.) Select Use Express Settings (you can customize settings later on):

Consistency between users and Users folders [IMG]

9.) Now continue as told in following tutorial setting up your new main admin account, starting from Step 21 in tutorial: Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

Please notice: when setting up your new admin user account as told in above tutorial you cannot use any existing username. If you for instance already have created user FP as you mentioned, using that username will not be accepted. In this example I have tried to make my new account named but as that username is already reserved, I get a notification telling me to use another username:

10.) When you have reached Windows Desktop with your new account, open Windows Settings app, select Accounts:

Consistency between users and Users folders [IMG]

11.) Select Family & other people:

Consistency between users and Users folders [IMG]

12.) One by one select all possible users under Other People and remove them:

That's it. You have now a brand new local admin user account, the preset account User and other possible unnecessary accounts have been removed.

I read the instructions and I see two potential problems:

    1. If I understand it correctly, even though I have deleted the FP user and there is now only the USER default user, after the procedure I still won't be able to add a FP user. If so, this does not solve my problem.

    2. Will the procedure make any other changes to the system other than to the user mgmt component? I am running W10 v.1511 which is configured in various ways not to check or accept ANY Windows updates of ANY kind. If the procedure changes that configuration and/or trigger any updates to the system, then it is not a solution. The reason I wanted a renamed folder is because I wanted to have both of my systems as similar as possible, but not at the price of risking buggy MS updates or adding back all sorts of W10 bloatware that I removed.

    Please advise.
    Thanks.

There are no potential or even imaginary problems in Sysprep procedure.

Not an offence, just a fact based on your previous posts: Your posts show that you don't even know how you created this FP user account, that you are not very familiar with creating / removing / renaming user accounts in Windows. Instructions given solve your issue and let you start from scratch, without losing your personal files and installed software.

If you do not know if user account FP exists or not, you'll find it out when following the instructions when it's time to create new initial admin account. If FP exists as an already existing username, you can't use that name.

Extract from step 9 in instructions in my previous post:

In all honesty I have to admit that I lost all interest in this thread after reading the highlighted part in above quote. I will not help nor have I ever helped to mismanage a computer. I will unsubscribe after posting this post.

Sysprep when in on an existing system creates a new machine SID and resets some core Windows settings to defaults. It does not change Windows registry other than what's needed to register new SID both for the machine and initial admin user created during OOBE. It does not touch installed software, drivers, user data and such.

Advice: do as told in those simple instructions if you want a permanent solution to your issue. If continuing mismanaging your PC (no updates) is more important, continue trying to play with user accounts and forget the instructions.

    A very sincere,

I gave up on the idea anyway -- I can manage without it.

But I suggest you educate yourself and FAST: FYI, there is much more risk from Windows update today and spying than from anything else. Do yourself a favor and read here thoroughly:

    AskWoody

If you do you'll find out that it's Microsoft that mismanages user computers, I am just trying to keep mine working.
    So please.
