Windows 10: Constant disc usage/unable to update

Yo.

So since about late November I've noticed that several programs, including System, Chrome, Explorer, Antimalware Service Executable, all tick around 0.1mb/s when I have task manager pulled up and i'm just idling. the disc usage overall never goes higher than 1 percent, with it being at zero most of the time, so part of me thinks it's more so just reporting the numbers differently as opposed to anything with those applications actually constantly reading/writing at 0.1. It didn't used to do that, used to be zero all around. Any idea what could be causing this? Any way I could probe further to get specifics?

On a slightly less interesting but perhaps more urgent note, I have been unable to update to the newest Cumulative update packages since maybe early October? Checking my update log, Windows Defender and NET.Framework whatever are receiving the newest patches and installing correctly, but Windows itself hitches as soon as it tries to install. I guess it's not that big a deal right now, but I don't want to let the updates pile up too much and leave me in the dust. Any idea what could be causing that? Always spits out error 0xc1900223 at me

100% Disc usage when starting the PC

Hi Dave,

thanks for your fast reply.

The top 5 processes change all the time.

But the most often ones are:

System

Antimalware Service Executable

Chrome

Malwarebytes Service (It is doing a search right now)

Service Host (a couple different ones)

EDIT

The Malwarebytes Scan is done now but still in the top 5.

The disc usage went down to a decent number so I started a steam update to see what would happen, Results:

Steam is now Top 1 with around 60MB/s, disc usage is constantly on 95%.

Second EDIT

Steam is still updating but the disc usage is now on a constant low like 4-15% so there has to be something else bothering my pc, right?

Thanks for getting back to me.

I started going through your list of suggestions.

I have switched off all background apps. I was horrified to see so many.

I then disabled windows update.

At that stage I thought I would check out disc usage on task manager.

Disc activity had gone down dramatically and in the performance tag activity was very low, it spiked from time to time if I did something on the PC but the speed on all activity was back to normal.

I thought I would leave things as they were and see if things stayed the same.

No problems at all until this afternoon I was trying to look at a file via windows explorer and got the message "not responding". A quick look at task manager and disc activity is 100% again. Everything slows down. I close down some screens and the desk
top turns black.

The only way I can get a display up again is "alt" + "tab". The task bar has disappeared. I decided to reboot but the only way I can do that is with the on'/off switch.

The PC reboots. I check that all the apps are still switched off and windows update is still disabled, Disc activity is still 100%.

As I type this disc activity has suddenly dropped. it keeps spiking to 100% but then reverts back to about 12%.

Is this normal or is there something else I should do.

Back to 100% now. How do I find out what is actually happening, what activity is the disc doing?

I am confused.

Any suggestions?

 

Constant script errors and slow loading pages in 10 internet explorer 11

I have done the steps listed above. They have not helped and I am still getting constant script errors, along with slow loading pages. Are there any other suggestions?
