Windows 10: control buttons not working on MSI laptop?

I have a new MSI gaming laptop I got just a couple months ago. Ever since I've had it, I've never been able to use the volume/mic/brightness/etc control buttons at the top, and I don't know why. I assumed it would go away with an update, but it hasn't. I've made sure it's updated, I've checked settings. I'm not sure what else might be helpful. Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but whenever I plug/unplug it, the computer screen goes black for a second. My brother thinks he's techy and said it's no big deal, but I'm not sure. Should I be worried..? What should I try? I'm not so concerned ab

This is Wil, one of the independent advisor, an expert with Windows 10 and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. I understand your concern about installing webcam on MSI laptops.

Most laptops have a built-in webcam on it, If it's not working, there's a problem with the driver or settings of it.

Step1: I request you to check for Hidden Devices in Device Manager. Please refer to these steps:

a. On the desktop, press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.

b. Click on View and select Show Hidden Devices.

c. Check for the webcam under Imaging Devices.

d. If the webcam is listed, then right-click on it and select Update Driver Software.

e. Select Browse My Computer for Driver Software and follow the prompted steps.

Step 2: Run the hardware troubleshooter and check if you receive any error messages.

a. On the desktop, press Windows key + W and type Troubleshooting.

b. Click on it and click on Hardware and Sound.

c. Click on Hardware and Devices and follow the prompted steps.

If the laptop doesn't have a built-in webcam on it, you would need to purchase an external webcam, plug it on your laptop and driver will download automatically.

Start button not working

Same thing happened to me, start button, search, Store, Edge, Xbox app and Cortana crashing. I have a MSI GT70, please let me know what do you think that I might be able to do? I tried all the suggestions
listed above and nothing worked

Finally, I can breathe again! PROBLEM SOLVED!!

The MSI support replied to me and suggested to do so:

Touchscreen is not working anymore in laptop mode:
According to your description, you have reset completely from its original form, but the issue was still not solved.
We also found you have installed the msi website graphics drivers.
It seems not a software issue. But before send to the repair center, we wish you can try the below suggests:
1.Please try the EC Reset Steps， which may help you find back the devices.
1). Power off the notebook.
2). Remove the AC adapter.
3). Long press power button over 25 seconds. (Note: The system would be power on and shut down during the time while pressing the power button)
4). Insert the straighten paper clip to the EC reset hole located at the back/right side of the notebook for 30 sec.

I was more than sure that the problem was in between the 2 software and not hardware, but I didn't know there was a possibility to do this hard reset with the needle!! :0
