Control panel closes automatically after windows 10 1511 update

After Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3118754) I was unable to use Control panel since after few seconds of opening control panel closes automatically and returns you to desktop view causing you not being able to use any of control panel features.

    I have a Dell Inspiron 15 N5050 upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7 home 64 bits.

The Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3120677) that came few days later did not solve this problem.

After some days of investigation I have found that for some reason Windows 10 1511 update had eliminated my IDT High definition Audio Codec that was working well so far and it has been replaced by a High Definition Audio with Microsoft drivers. This was causing Control panel to close automatically. You can check this using Device manager, Sound video and game controllers to find that a High Definition Audio is present (using a Microsoft driver) but there is not the IDT High Definition Audio Codec that used to be there for my laptop model.

To solve the problem I was able to retrieve from Dell downloads the IDT High Definition Audio Codec driver suited for my laptop: IDT 92HD87B1 Audio Driver For Inspiron N5050 R308434, an auto executable file that reinstalls IDT High Definition Audio Codec. (If you have the same problem be sure to use only the driver suited for your laptop model)

After this driver re installation and reboot the Control Panel works fine as well as audio features, including the IDT high definition control panel that used to be present within the main Control Panel (Hardware and Sound) for my laptop model.

I hope this helps somebody else having a similar problem.

    :)

Control panel opens but closes immediately on Windows 10

Thank you. We didn't find an IDT audio driver. Apparently with the latest Windows update, it got changed. But you led us in the right direction. We had to go to the Dell web site and found this solution and it worked:

    Thanks a million.

Thanks for posting that fix, exactly same fault on Dell Inspiron 15 N5040, fixed using your method. Great post. *Smile

Yes this is a great post. But clearly some of you had more success than me. Since December 2015 I have tried in vain to install Win10 on my Dell 15 N5050. At first, I had black screen, then it failed to even try to recover! Then I managed to install Win7 (the default OS) back but lost the audio codec (so I share your frustrations) and finally Dell said it is not supported.

However, I did notice that on their tested list they have added "Inspiron 3537/Inspiron 15"

Meanwhile, I have tried again to put Win10 on and it install 50% before aborting. Every single time. Tried Microsoft support. Tey used remote to try...and despite their confidence again it only installs 50% of the way before restoring to Win7.h

Dell don't always get it right...,.my older Dell Inspiron 1545 had no problem adding Win10 (even if the partition did leave a residual Win7 on there too!). That older PC just needed audio restoring and while you can no longer use DSD with upgrade to Win10 as Dell can't actually see your PC anymore) I was able to manually get audio back.

So why is Dell 15 N5050, a newer machine, so stubborn?

  6. When upgrading the Dell laptops you should connect an external monitor to see the screen. From there a couple of Windows updates clears the black screen problem.

I have downloaded a zip file called the zip file for this driver, but when I unzip it it has about 60 items in it. How do I install the driver? ie which file to I click to run the install?
