CoolEdit2000 trapped in Demo/Trial mode even w/ serial entered

I know there was a thread about this some time back, but it just might be that those still using Cool Edit 2000 have run into the same problem I did. I've been using it ever since Windows XP. I paid for it and registered it. Whenever a new version of Windows came along, I loaded it onto the new version and it ran fine- right up until Windows 10 came along.

I have no idea why, but when I ran the ce2kreg.exe file, it accepted my info just fine and then ran CE2000 okay. But when I shut it down and started it up again, I got a popup dialog box that informed me I was running the program in demo mode and it was limited in what it would do, that it would not save anything. I can't tell you how many different ways I tried to uninstall it, reload it, run it in compatibility mode, etc., etc.

One thing I've been doing is running Windows 8.1 on one hard drive and Windows 10 on another. I just simply swap out the drives whenever I want to run either version. I have gone the dual boot way many times, but neither drive was big enough to do that this time.

I put the 8.1 drive in, ran that and checked the Cool Edit files and noticed the cool.ini file was a lot different! I also noticed there were 73 items in it whereas the Windows 10 folder only had 66 in it. I copied all the files from the program in Windows 8.1 onto a USB drive. That total is including the original 4 folders installed by the program at setup. I left the 4 original folders alone. Then I deleted all the files in the Windows 10 Cool2000 folder and copied all the files from the Windows 8.1 folder Cool2000 into the Windows 10 Cool2000 folder. I started up the program, which was always okay the first start up. I shut it down and re-started it and it showed I had a demo program, etc., the same as before. But then I ran the registration program, put in my info, and IT WORKS!

One thing, which probably everyone knows, is that just copying the files won't work because none of the required registration of files has taken place. The program worked because all of the files that needed to be installed into the registry were already there because I had already installed it. The files in the program folder; C:\Program Files (x86)\Cool2000, were not right and there weren't as many. It may have worked by just changing the cool.ini file but I wasn't taking any chances since there were 6 files less than in the working copy.

Yes, I've had my money's worth out of the program. I know that. But I also know I am 83 years old and do not have any income any more. I cannot afford to buy a new program that does what Cool Edit 2000 does. It works great! It's a fantastic program! I'm running it now- June 7, 2019, Windows 10 version 1903 and it works just fine.

I hope this helps some of you who may still be using the program. I would have replied to the original thread posted here, but it was closed. So I decided to start a new discussion about it and maybe someone would run across it that could get some help from what I tried. CoolEdit2000 trapped in Demo/Trial mode even w/ serial entered :)

Sorry about the topic choice. There wasn't an option for program installation.

    :)
