  3. Copying files to usb flash drive grinds to a halt

Hi, rml123. I'm sorry to hear you're having this problem, and I hope I can assist you to find a satisfactory solution.

It depends on the number of files and whether you are using the USB 3.0 port or not.

    Is it formatted as ntfs?

Have you tested it on another USB port?

I'll leave you with some checks to do:

Check the USB Drive for Errors

    Scan for Errors:

Connect the USB drive to your computer.

Open File Explorer and right-click the USB drive.

Select Properties > Tools > Check (under Error checking).

Follow the prompts to scan and fix any errors on the drive.

    Format the USB Drive Properly

    Full Format:

Open File Explorer and right-click the USB drive.

    Select Format.

Choose File System as NTFS or exFAT (exFAT is better for compatibility with different operating systems and handling large files).

Uncheck Quick Format for a full format.

    Click Start.

Check Write Speed Using Benchmarking Tools

    CrystalDiskMark:

    Download and install CrystalDiskMark.

Run the benchmark on your USB drive to check its read and write speeds.

Compare the results with the expected speeds for a USB 3.0 flash drive.

    Check for Background Processes

    Resource Monitor:

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

Go to the Performance tab and click Open Resource Monitor at the bottom.

Check the Disk tab to see if other processes are using a lot of disk resources.

    Large Number of Small Files

    File Types:

Copying a large number of small files can be slower than copying a few large files.

Try zipping the files into a single archive (e.g., using WinRAR or 7-Zip) and then copying the archive to the USB drive.

    Check for Hardware Issues

    USB Drive Health:

If the USB drive is old or heavily used, it might be failing. Consider replacing it with a new, high-quality USB drive.

    Disable Write Caching

    Device Manager:

Press Win + X and select Device Manager.

Expand Disk Drives, right-click your USB drive, and select Properties.

Go to the Policies tab and uncheck Enable write caching on the device (if checked).

    Update USB Drivers

    Update Drivers:

Press Win + X and select Device Manager.

Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click each USB Root Hub and select Update driver.

Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

    Hope it helps
