    Copying Program Problem

I wonder if someone can help me with this problem. I have a Bridge Scoring program on my Windows 10 laptop which runs without a problem. I want to provide a copy (it's was a free program but is now no longer available) to a colleague who has a two year old laptop running on Windows 7. I copied the program onto a disk which I gave to the colleague. The program seems to load onto the colleagues laptop without a problem. However, when he tries to use parts of the program he gets two "Error 339" messages. The messages refer to component "COMDLG.ocx" and to component "MSFLXGRD.ocx". Both messages say " Component XXX or one of its dependencies is not correctly registered: a file is missing or corrupt ".

Are these 'OCX' components normally found in Windows 7 and if so what is the easiest way to restore them to normal ?. I have tried running sfc /scannow on the colleagues laptop but this showed no errors. Your help would be very welcome though I would not wish to play around in the Registry of the colleagues laptop if this can be avoided.

    :)

  2. copy a program

You don't copy programs. You copy the .exe file and install it on the new computer.

Missing Comdlg32.ocx error while running an application?

I just searched for COMDLG.ocx missing. You can do the same for the other. Hope that helps- let us know if it works in '10.

However- do you know if the program requires registry entries? Some old visual basic programs did not.
You could try using RegfromApp (Nir Sofer) to check.

I'm going to assume you know all the possible other areas where programs may create and use folders in addition to the installation folder.

What did you copy? I've seen similar problems when NOT installing Windows-based programs from the disc they came with or a downloaded file that installs the full program. The problem with copying such programs from an HDD to another computer is not all the support files are copied as they may be in other Folders/subFolders and proper Registry entries are not made nor icons created in the Start menu. It was possible to do it back in the DOS days and, although a bit tedious, Windows 3.xx to do so but the programs were much simpler.

I copied the complete program folder with all its files. What is puzzling me is that I can copy the program to my wife's PC, which also runs on Windows 10, where it works fine. Yet these missing files are nowhere to be found, neither in Windows 10 nor Windows 7. So why is the program working OK when copied onto another Windows 10 computer but not a Windows 7 ? I know, from previous use of the program, that it does run in Windows 7 when downloaded to that O/S from the internet but as I said earlier the program is no longer available from that source. I might try downloading the missing files and just adding them to the program itself but I have no great confidence that this will work.

One thing about support files for programs is that the same ones can be installed by other programs and work with what is desired, hard to find out which programs are involved. Sometimes those files can be extracted from a disc used to install programs but that takes some time in trying to find the necessary files. I have [a long time ago] set 2 computers up and copied as you did and when trying to run the program which gives the message look in the computer that successfully runs that program using Search to find the required file, copy it to removable media, write down where it was located and then put the file in the same place on the first computer. Sometimes .dll files need to be registered so Windows knows about them. But again, it is time consuming. Then one has to create shortcut icons to get to the .exe/executable file that runs the program.

    Copying Program Problem

Thank you Berton and dalchina for your interest. I am pleased to say I have managed to get the program running successfully on the colleagues Windows 7 laptop. I went back into the SysWOW64 files on my own Windows 10 laptop, this time with my eyes open. I found I did have the OCX files that were reported missing or not registered when attempting to run the program in Windows 7. I therefore downloaded the missing files on the Windows 7 laptop and copied them into SysWOW64. I then had to register them by the command process and everything worked from there.
    Thanks again for your support.
