    Corrupted Cortana

I discovered recently that Cortana had been corrupted on one of my systems. There was no “search” function, or anything else. I tried everything I could find on line to fix it, but no joy.

As a last resort I re-installed Windows 10 (latest download). While that solved the Cortana problem, it also introduced a network one that has yet to get resolved.

To solve the (more important) network situation, I reverted to the previous C-drive image and am again without the Cortana service.

Has anyone else had a problem with Cortana, and/or perhaps an idea about how to restore the functionality?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    :)

    Corrupted Cortana

Hi, unfortunately I don't know what
    comprised.

    Anyway, you could check this:
Cortana - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

    Try this, checking settings:
Cortana - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Look at your action centre: is the Location tile on (bright)?

Do you see this in your task manager?

    Corrupted Cortana [IMG]

What happens if you press Windows key + S?
(You should see a Cortana dialogue box)

Please post a screenshot of what you see of Cortana.
Do you have a search box visible on the task bar?

    Then there's this to reinstall:
Reinstall Cortana on desktop Accidentally uninstalled app - Microsoft Community
    same thing here:

Hello, thanks for what seems a partial response- difficult to read as you've edited quoted text within the quotes.

So, I'll need to ask some things again, more explicitly.

    1. Please look at
Cortana - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Noting Cortana can be disabled by this method, look at your PC and check this has not been applied to yours.

Question: has either the group policy or registry been modified in the way described here to disable Cortana?

    2. Try this, checking settings:
Cortana - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Question: Have you tried this? What was the result?

    3. Then there's this to reinstall:
Reinstall Cortana on desktop Accidentally uninstalled app - Microsoft Community

You may find this version easier to follow as the font and layout in the above is somewhat unclear.
Instructions to Reinstall Cortana Koohii Daisuki

Question: Did you run the command in a Powershell Window?

Please post a screenshot of how you are trying to run the command.

    Thanks.

    Dalchina,

In response to the above… by your numbers

    1. GP Allow Cortana – Not configured. I then enable it.
1.a GP Allow Cortana Above Lock Screen – Not configured. I then enable it

Neither the Registry or GPM has been modified in that way.

    2. Cortana is NOT listed in the Task Manager
2.a Tried to turn ON Cortana – No joy.

    3. Reinstall Cortana – See dialog below. Still no joy.

    Thanks for your help.

    Corrupted Cortana

Hi, if nothing works for you, try an in-place upgrade repair install.

Precede it with this in case sthg has happened to your file system:

    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed, and x64 if you have a 64 bits OS, else x86 (32 bits).

    Recommendation:
Before you perform the following major repair procedure, do create a disk image (see below).

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
    - this includes a link from which you can obtain Windows 10 iso file (" download a Windows 10 ISO"), or create a bootable medium.

I would recommend creating the bootable medium, as this can be used
    - for any future in-place upgrade repair install
    - to boot from and use its recovery options should Windows become unbootable.
    - to clean install Windows

This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
    - all/most associations will be unchanged
    - all your programs will be left installed
    - no personal data should be affected
    - you will lose any custom fonts
    - you will lose any customised system icons
    - you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
    - you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
    - Windows.old will be created
    - system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
    - you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)
    - inactive title bar colouring (if used) will be reset to default
    - if Qttabbar is installed, you need to re-enable it in explorer (Options, check Qttabbar)
This is one of the better features of Win10: as each major build comes out, that's your updated reference build, and as updates are mostly cumulative, there will be few to do.

Please consider using disk imaging regularly. It's a brilliant way to
    - preserve your system (and your sanity)
    - back up your data
    - restore your system to a previously working state in a relatively short time

Recommended: Macrium Reflect (free/commercial) + boot disk/device + large enough external storage medium.

    Dalchina,

The post is titled “The specified network name is no longer available” - Windows 10 , and is in THIS forum, sub-group "Network and Sharing".

Basically, I discovered that Cortana was corrupted. My FIRST attempt at a fix was to do an in-place install to correct the problem. The problem with in-place installs is that it then adds ANY updates in the pipeline. After that install, Cortana worked just fine. My network-attached storage however was toast. No way to map to the drive. No way to get at it via IP address, etc. Since my other systems have no problem with that drive, and my family and myself connect to it ALL the time, I needed to revert back to the prior build. It was THEN that I decided to see if there were a way to re-install Cortana.

Hope this clarifies things. Thanks for trying.

  12. The network issue is frustrating, I wonder if trying the repair install is worth attempting again. Also to ensure the network is set to private instead of public. You could try temporarily disabling the firewall to see if you can connect to the storage should the issue persist. I think the cortana issue will never fix itself whilst the network troubleshooting may be easier in the long run. Just my 2 cents

    Corrupted Cortana

Tried ALL of that. I agree that Cortana won't get fixed, or WILL be fixed when the network issue is resolved in the latest build. My next step is to get Microsoft involved in the fix. Just need to set aside the hours THAT will take.
    Thanks.
