Windows 10: Could someone at Microsoft please put an end to the Windows 10 Update madness ?

Updating Windows 10 has now become a stressful experience for many users. You never know whether the operation will succeed within minutes or if the update will again fail and if you'll again spend hours applying various fixes that never help anayway.


Microsoft seem to consider that the problem is always on the user's side. Which is wrong. The update process itself is flawed. On my system, the Anniversary could never be installed. I tried all the recommendations made by MS to fix this. To no avail. Then came the Creators update and it installed without a hitch (nothing had changed on my system : same hardware, same apps). Now, I want to upgrade version 1709 to 1803 : no way. I tried everything with exception of a fresh re-installation of Windows : re-installing all my apps and tools would take several days. I can't waste that much time just to keep my OS up to date.


Even for experienced users (I'm a former MS Development MVP), determining the real cause of the update failure is impossible. Logs contain information that is difficult to understand and error codes are, say, fanciful or even ridiculous (e.g. The installation failed - thanks, I noticed this - please retry). My current version 1709 works without any problem. But obviously, it is unable to update itself safely and to provide enough information to the user to spot the cause of the failure. I consider this as a big issue.


Given the high number of users affected by these update problems, MS should provide a tool allowing to determine what is causing the failure instead of always repeating the same recommendations that most of the time don't help. Let's take an example. When I try to upgrade to version 1803, I can find in the log file an indication about when the failure occurred :

What on earth is a Dynamic download data fetcher ? Couldn't find any information about that.

Now, since I was really fed up with these permanent failures, I have hidden the 1803 Feature update. Do you think that Windows Update would stop bothering me with this flawed update ? No. It continues to systematically re-create the Windows10Upgrade, $GetCurrent and $WINDOWS.~BT folders, downloading useless data to my system disk.


That's not clean, that's not safe, that's not reliable. For the first time in my life, I'm considering purchasing a Mac. I'm surprising myself.


Now it's high time to do something about the Windows Update system to make it more simple and more reliable. Not sure this will happen...

Microsoft signals end of Paint program

Microsoft has confirmed that it will continue to offer its graphics program Paint.

In a recent update, it had listed Paint as a feature that would be either removed or no longer developed.

Paint, renowned for its simplicity, has been part of the Windows operating system since its launch in 1985.

Microsoft suggested it would not remain on Windows 10 by default but did say it would be available for free on the Windows Store.

it would've been great if microsoft added HEVC decoders, LAV filters along with other codecs with Windows 10, and developing WMP to be better than VLC, KMPlayer and such sorts of media players.

Nevertheless, this is good step for microsoft, by far.
