  1. CPU Maxes at 100% off disk build

    Dear Forum board
    build number 10586
I have built an HP Probook 450 G4 from disk from scratch,on starting to build it up I notice the CPU is maxing at 100% straight fromboot with an Ethernet cable in, I did a bit of research and disabled SuperFetchthat helped for a short while.
By looking at the service host local system, I found thatthe group that has Windows Update in there is what could be causing the problem,so I disabled windows update service, and the CPU dropped.
On a re-boot I found that the windows update re-starts, Ithen disabled it via the services and re-booted the laptop and the CPU and diskdo not max out.
Is there a way that I can keep the windows update servicerunning, but not every time, I insert an Ethernet lead it doesn’t max out theCPU and Disk?

    :)

  2. CPU Max at 100%

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand you are facing high CPU usage. Sorry for the inconvenience this has caused to you.

Please answer the below questions to assist you better.

    1. Does this high CPU usage occur even when the computer is idle?

    2. Did you make any software changes to the computer prior to this issue?

You may follow the below methods and check.

Method 1: I understand that you have performed a full system scan using third party anti-virus software. However, you may perform a full system scan using Windows defender and check if it helps.

Disclaimer: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Method 2: Let’s run System Maintenance by following the below steps and check.

    1. In the Search option of the taskbar type "Troubleshooting" and click on it.

    2. Locate “System and Security" and click on "Run Maintenance Task".

You may also install all the pending updates and check if it helps.

Updates are additions to software that can help prevent or fix problems, improve how your computer works, or enhance your computing experience.

Hope the information helps, do reply if you need further assistance.

    Thank you.

  3. CPU Max at 100%

    Hi Steven,

    Thanks for the update.

If the windows built-in defender is not able to remove the virus or malicious items on your computer. You may try performing the full system scan using the Windows defender offline and check.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline

Note: Windows defender offline is different from windows 10 built in defender. Windows Defender Offline can help remove hard to find malicious and potentially unwanted programs using definitions that recognize threats.

Disclaimer: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

CPU Maxes at 100% off disk build

I think it is reasonable to expect 100% for disk activity for short periods on boot up. For example I get this for about 3 minutes after any startup. Sometimes it will be longer if I there have been some recent updates. Similarly CPU will be high for short periods but usually less so than the disk activity.

Have you tried leaving it running for a while or overnight and then seeing if it runs better? With a new build I would expect it may take a day or two to settle down as there is a lot of background indexing to be completed and prefetch data to be established so that the system can run more efficiently.

  5. many thanks, I kind of self solved it myself.
1st step was disable the windows update service
2nd install the Essential System Updates for Microsoft Windows 10 (off the HP model laptop section) update and reboot
3rd load the windows 10 update settings, make sure that the windows update service is disabled
4th the windows 10 update settings will show check for updates.
5th set the windows update service to manual and then start the windows update service
6th click on the check for updates
this should then start to pull updates down.

at this moment in time the laptop is 88% downloading and has been for over and hour now
