Windows 10: CPU Spike bug in latest Windows 10 1903 update reported to Microsoft

Microsoft released the cumulative update KB4512941 for Windows 10 version 1903 last week; soon thereafter, reports started to emerge on several Internet forums that the update was causing high CPU usage on some systems.

Günter Born was among the first to provide an analysis of the issue. According to the information, it is the Cortana process SearchUI.exe that is causing the load on the system. Windows 10 users can verify that by using Ctrl-Shift-Esc to launch the Task Manager. There they may want to sort the process listing with a click on the CPU header to bring the processes with the highest CPU load to the top of the listing.

Cortana in the Processes tab or SearchUI.exe in the Details tab should be listed there as the culprits on systems affected by the issue. The Start Menu search is not working on affected systems which is a serious issue.

Born suggests that the issue is somehow connected to the cache folder that Cortana uses on Windows 10. An initial workaround had users replace the cache folder with an earlier copy to resolve the issue but most admins would have to uninstall the cumulative update, copy the cache folder before reinstalling it.

According to a user report on Reddit, the issue is experienced on systems on which Bing Search is disabled. Bing Search can be disabled in the Windows Registry or by running one of the many privacy tools for Windows 10.

Microsoft integrated Bing Search natively into Windows 10; users who disliked the integration could turn it off. The company split Cortana and Windows Search in Windows 10 1903, and improved web search in 2017 by adding better previews to the results.

Microsoft has not acknowledged the issue on the official support page for the update. The company pushed the update to the Release Preview ring and some testers have reported the issue during that phase to Microsoft. The reports did not receive many votes however and it seems likely that Microsoft did not prioritize the bug because of that.



A solution is making the rounds that fixed the issue on some devices reportedly. Admins would have to enable Bing Search -- the sending of local search queries to Microsoft's Bing search engine, to fix the issue for the time being. Here is how that is done:

1. Use Windows-R to bring up the run box.
2. Type regedit.exe and hit the Enter-key.
3. Confirm the UAC prompt.
4. Go to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search
5. Right-click on Search and select Export from the context menu to back up the data.
6. Locate the Dword value BingSearchEnabled.
7. Either delete the key, or set it to 1.
8. Restart the PC.

Another option is to uninstall the cumulative update to go back to the previous version.

The incident is not the first on Windows 10. Microsoft broke the option to disable web searching in Windows 10 1803.

It is unclear at this point how widespread the issue is. Microsoft has not acknowledged it and while it has made the rounds on forums and tech blogs, it seems to affect systems with Bing Search turned off only.

CPU Temperature spikes Immediately following Feature Update to Windows


Immediately after installing the latest (big) feature update to Windows 10 1903, my CPU temperatures started to spike.

CPU is NOT overclocked
CPU is Water Cooled, all indications are that pump is running and fans run
Case, fans, radiator are all clean
Temps appear normal or very close to normal at idle or very low cpu usage. 27C-33C
Moderate or high cpu usage results in temperature spike 10C or higher than immediately prior to latest Windows install. 75C-80C or even higher when previous highs would spike around 65C
Temperatures given are the core temperatures using Core Temp. Room temperature is 22-23C

I've tried to discover if there could be a cause or something else such as excess background programs running, Runtime Broker problems etc etc, anything that may result in a possible issue and fix and either no luck or just not sure.

Also aware that there is a slight possibility that with a highly unusual timing coincidence, that the cpu cooler may be starting to go just as my computer restarted with the new Windows update. But because of the timing, I don't want to just up and get a new cpu cooler ($$$) and tear the pc apart to find out its not that.

Any insights to solutions or possible feature update bugs that will be corrected later would be greatly appreciated.

After 1903 update: CPU spikes and noisy fan

Hi,

after installing the 1903 update the fan of my PC gets loud while using common programs (even while browsing simple text websites).

Checking via task manager shows high CPU peaks... this didn't happend before the update, even the fan was only hearable while doing difficult renderings etc.

My configuration (with latest drivers of course):

• AMD A6-5400K APU with AMD Radeon HD 7540D
• 64 Bit
• 3.6 GHz
• 6 GB RAM
• 1000 GB HD (800 GB free)

The only workaround was reducing the cpu speed via "AMD Catalyst Control Center" to 2.8 GHz (which makes the PC slower of course).

Any ideas? Thanks!

 

Windows Audio service high cpu usage after updating to win10 1903

This might be a bug in Windows 10 1903 that is yet to be fixed. Others have been reporting driver issues with video cards under 1903. Ultimately, rolling back or reinstalling Windows 10 1809 resolves the issue.

You might just have to stick with Windows 10 1809 for the time being until this fixed or stick it out with Windows 10 1903 if you want to be on the latest version. Microsoft has fixed issues such as Nighlight bug with recent cumulative updates.

I would also recommend you file a bug report; send me the short link so I can vote on it and bring it to the attention of the Windows engineers.
