1. Crash while sleeping

From time to time my HTPC will crash while going to sleep. There's nothing to see on screen - I just find I have to press the power button on the PC (the remote doesn't work) and the system starts up from scratch.

The event log shows the crash. BlueScreenView reports DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and implicates ntoskernel.exe - which doesn't help me identify what causes the problem.

Here's the odd bit, the fault is intermittent but it seems to happen only when I use KVM software. I often have a laptop running and it's convenient to use my laptop mouse and keyboard to drive the HTPC. I started with MouseWithoutBorders which I used a lot with W7 and no problems. It's not been updated for a while so I've uninstalled it and installed ShareMouse instead - and the same fault happened.

It looks like the technology employed by both bits of software is causing problems for W10 - or maybe it's just a coincidence.

I'd be really grateful for any help you can provide. I attach the dump stuff. I've tried running the driver verifier and nothing happened.

PS. Forgot to say the Realtek High Definition Audio device is disabled deliberately. I don't need it and in the past it was implicated in causing problems reconnecting to receivers attached via HDMI after sleep.

:)

2. Various BSOD after sleep

After sleeping the machine it becomes unstable sometimes and after a while crashes with different BSOD reasons. This only seems to happen if I sleep the machine it's only ever BSOD'd once without sleeping it.

Update the Intel LAN Driver (Version 20.2) from here: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1150 - GA-Z87MX-D3H (rev. 1.x)

See how it goes. Let us know.

For any further issue, update your MSINFO32.nfo file alongwith the DM log.

6. 'Tis done and everything's up and running. The network adaptor was originally using a Windows driver and is now using an Intel one.

Unfortunately that change stopped my Develo Cockpit software from working (it allows me to monitor and manage my ethernet over power network), but uninstalling and reinstalling fixed that. I also had to go into device manager and untick 'Wake on pattern match' to allow the PC to sleep. I've reinstalled MouseWithoutBorders and I've gone through sleep OK having used it.

Given the nature of the problem I'll only know something for sure if the crash reoccurs. Otherwise, it will be some time before I'm confident it's fixed. I'll set a reminder for 4 weeks time to come back and update.

In the meantime, thanks for your fast response - here's hoping.

I think it is not to you, he is trying to get some attention to his issue. It is a violation of Forum Rule 2, but as he needs help, it is overlooked for this instance.

9. I'm sorry to say I'm back. My PC ran fine for a couple of weeks but then the original error came back. Here's the diagnostics:

It is the same device driver that is failing.
Code: >[IRP_MJ_POWER(16), IRP_MN_SET_POWER(2)] 0 e1 8f793030 00000000 82451ef2-b7c12b28 Success Error Cancel pending Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\e1d6532.sys, Win32 error 0n2 *** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for e1d6532.sys *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for e1d6532.sys \Driver\e1dexpress nt!PopSystemIrpCompletion Args: 00015400 00000000 00000005 00000003
The device is Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I217-V, the LAN chip integrated to the motherboard.

It is failing despite of a driver update.
Code: Image name: e1d6532.sys Timestamp: Thu Jun 18 22:04:50 2015
The most logical reasoning behind this BSOD is ....
For some reason, the driver is not complying with the ACPI setup and so it is failing to complete a power IRP within a specific time. It becomes too difficult to find out what is making the device driver failing in this way.

I have two suggestions for you in this stage. Either go in depth of the issue, or bypass it.

To go in depth, do a clean reinstall. Dont use any drivers etc off the motherboard's CD. Use Device Installation Settings to get the drivers. Dont add any programs. Leave the computer alone for half an hour. Then wake it up. Is there a BSOD?
If not, add Utorrent, OneDrive, DropBox, Antivirus etc programs one by one. Try to observe it minutely which of these programs is initiating the issue. I think you will get something.

Or you may simply disable Hibernate/Sleep. The issue should be gone.

11. Thanks for the really fast response - much appreciated.

Hibernate/sleep is an essential for my HTPC, so I can't by-pass the issue. The problem happens maybe 5-10 times a year, so your 'adding programs one-by-one' approach wouldn't help in my situation because I can never be 100% sure whether the problem is there, or not. In any case, to avoid the work involved in a reinstall, I'm prepared to put up with an occasional issue (worst case, the problem occurs the first day of a holiday and the HTPC fails to make any recordings while I'm away, and I can't schedule new recordings over the internet).

Is it possible something else is tripping up the Lan driver do you think? As an experiment, I just stopped and disabled the Develo Network Service which allows the Develo monitoring software to interface with my network.

Thanks again,

Andy

Hi Andy.
I think disabling uninstalling network monitoring program will be an excellent step. We have seen it many a times that those programs contribute to BSODs.

Uninstall that program and see if it causes any good there. Best of luck.

13. Crash while sleeping

It's been four weeks since our last exchange on this issue and I'm pleased to report the problem has not re-occurred. I stopped the Develo Network Service - I might need it again later if I decide to add some more LAN-over-power devices so I didn't uninstall it. Although I can't prove a negative, I'm hoping that four weeks trouble-free use means that we've found the source of the problem. And that I haven't just jinxed it!

Thanks again for your help.
