Yeah, that would be a problem I think. I have a 32GB stick that I will try this on soon. I will let you know how it works.

@Brink Shawn, could you explain, please, the "why" for these entries? From Option #1, Step #6. With my USB plugged in, I see NTFS and 4096 as defaults. I had previously formatted USB using Rufus to "play" with a "leak", maybe that's the cause. My Rufus is higher version, 2.2.668. Thanks, Dick.

    Hey Dick, *Smile

It's to be able to boot from and install with UEFI.

The settings you had would only allow you to install using legacy BIOS instead of with UEFI.

  6. I have created a UEFI USB drive using the Rufus method, but I am unable to boot to it. When I try to selected as the boot drive for my GA-X99-UD4 I get the following error:

Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot devices and press a key

I have disabled Secure Boot and Fast Boot.

There are two methods of creating the boot drive with Rufus. One is for Legacy BIOS and the other is for UEFI. Be sure you have selected the correct method (it took me two or three tries before I got it right).

I have also noticed that in creating the UEFI bootable that the GPT option will sometimes change itself. So, before you complete the operation, be sure to compare what Shawn has shown to what you see on your screen.

Hint: I printed the instructions so that I would have a comparison to look at. *Smile

I'm almost certain that the settings were correct. I even re-download the .ISO and reformatted the drive.

Make sure your UEFI settings are USB Enabled and Legacy is Disabled. Put your USB as #1 in boot priority order, followed by DVD, then HDD.

P.S. - When you get it to boot and you start your install, after it has finished setting up for install and before it re-boots the first time, take out your thumb drive. You probably will not get a "Press any key to boot....." message, and it will boot again into the install. Endless loop!

The Gigabyte motherboard UEFI firmware (BIOS) settings. -> link

edit: Windows 10 64-bit installation media is also compatible with UEFI Secure Boot enabled.

That will also depend on if the motherboard one has is compatible with Secure Boot enabled. Not all models are, but most of the newer ones are thank goodness.

Great post and easy to follow for a novice user... Rufus has been updated to 2.2.668 which does the same job as the previous version but selection is slightly different and some users might get a little light headed and confused because the screen captures are different in the latest version. Because I have used Rufus before and I know how to use it, it was plain and simple for me and it worked a treat.

I want to put all the files from the dvd (I've ordered Windows 10 Box) onto a USB stick for faster install. Is this possible and is there a tutorial for it?

Assuming, (hate that word), the DVD has the proper stuff.. ('nother good word), ImgBurn works in reverse. Pull the ISO from the DVD, then do a Rufus on it, to a thumb.
