Create new spanned volume - Operation not supported by object

    Hello,

I just bought myself an HDD docking station, and following instructions on lifehacker, tried to create a spanned volume, so that I can use two spare Western Digital 500Gb HDDs as a single 1Tb HDD.

All seemed to go OK until the last point, when I got an error "The operation is not supported by the object"

The two drives are fine, and the dock seems to work fine. I can format the two drives individually, and they show up in File Explorer correctly, but I can't crate a spanned volume.

    Anyone any ideas? Thanks

    :)

Disk mirror fails on two identical disks with "All disks holding extents for a given volume must have the same sector size, and the sector size must be valid."

... or is it sufficient to create a small volume on each disk, span them , break them up again and then do the morroring ?

  3. New Windows 10 Multidrive setup

Unfortunately, when I right click on Disk0, I only get two opions; "convert to dynamic disk" and "convert to mbr disk".

"new spanned volume" and "new striped volume" are grayed out.

    Properties does nothing.

    Thanks for the effort!

I would not bother. Spanned drives are PITA to backup, and if one fails life gets complicated.

Oh, that took the wind out of my sails!

I was doing this to create a bigger drive for backups. I Macrium Reflect to do daily disk images, but the HDD I currently use isn't big enough to hold more than three images. I was hoping to span these and use the result as a bigger backup drive.

Is there any other way to do it? Thanks for the reply.

Still hoping to be able to create a spanned disk. The event viewer contains an entry form when I tried...

    Source: VDS Dynamic Provider
Message: The provider encountered an error while converting the basic disk to a dynamic disk. status=C00000BB, Disk number=2

    Anyone able to advise? Thanks

In case it helps anyone, I discovered that the problem is that when you use a box like I bought, Windows sees the disks in it as removable media, and it won't let you create a spanned drive on removable media. So the box just wasn't suitable for what I wanted.

Sent it back and bought a big external disk for backups. Should have done that in the first place, but was trying to save money!

    Hope this helps someone.
