Create second instance of sound device

I have two software programs that require different settings (levels)of the same sound device. I know I can manually change the levels in Settings/Sound/Properties, but it would be easier if I could have TWO instances of the device show up under sound devices, then I rename one of them, and tell my software which one to use. I would NEVER be using both programs at the same time , so I am not asking to record or play from two devices simultaneously. The device is an external USB audio codec.

    Second Instance of printer

What are you trying to accomplish?

In general, you can have multiple instances of the same printer, but how you go about doing this will depend on what you're trying to do. For example, I have two identical HP printers connected by wi-fi. The "Print" dialog thus permits me to select where
I want the output to go.

If you have one printer that is always connected to the same USB port, you should be able to create a second instance of the printer in Devices and Printers as follows:

    1. Click "Add a printer" in Devices and Printers
    2. Select "Add a local printer"
    3. Select "Use an existing port"
    4. In the drop-down list next to "Use an existing port," select the port to which the printer is already attached. For an HP printer, this is likely to be "DOT4_001" or similar, although it might be "Virtual USB xxx." If you're not sure, see the note below.
    5. Click "Next"
    6. Select the make (HP) and model of the printer from the "Install printer driver" dialog (perhaps you're doing this so one instance of the printer can use a different driver, such as a PostScript driver)
    7. Make the appropriate choices on the next page and complete the Wizard

Note for step 4: If you need to confirm the port to which the printer currently is connected, right-click on the printer's icon in Devices and Printers and select "Printer properties" (NOT "Properties" or "Printing preferences"). Click the "Ports" tab.
The port to which the printer is connected will be checked and highlighted. You may have to click and drag on the faint vertical separator bar between "Port" and "Description" in the table's header row.

    Good surround sound headset

I know you say you're not that guy, but stepping into the $250+ range really brings a change in build quality that might have you never having to buy another set. Otherwise, getting 6 speakers with decent sound in a headset is hard, and that's what you are asking for, and I have no suggestions, but just a bump up the list. *Stick Out Tongue Create second instance of sound device :p
