Windows 10: Create System Image in Windows 10

These images are tiny on my multi Terabyte disks. Where is the problem. And wait when one of your MS incrementals is corrupted. That will be fun.

As you can see from the posted screen shots, Win 10 successfully created an image on a separate partition, but does not want to "see" it when the time comes to restore - likely, because it was created by a Win7 legacy program [regardless of the fact that the program is part and parcel of Win10 Pro]

 

Granted, 3rd party tools are a heck of a lot more versatile. *Wink

 

I guess anybody can use what they like. I had no luck with the Windows imaging.

 

The screen shot shows its looking for a file backup, not an image backup. What you need to do is start the system image recovery process and then you'll find the latest backup is selected together with the option to browse for and pick another.

 

If I've done a backup but I don't remember what I backed up, how do I see that kind of information?

Be sure it's the largest size VHD. The others will not work for this.

If you did, then see if you are able to open the WindowsImageBackup folder and approve first, then try again.

 

Well that won't work as the largest was nearly 500GB big and my current OS drive is only half that size.

 

That's ok. Mounting the VHD will not use space on your OS drive. Are you able to mount it after opening the WindowsImageBackup folder first?

 

I'm not sure we are on the same page. The vhd file in WindowsImageBackup folder is around 500gb so I wouldn't be able to copy it to the desktop and then do the tutorial you linked earlier.
