  3. Thanks Brink.

But if I understand you correctly, it seems that the Barefoot Kid method you refer to would require user input (however minimal) and I'm trying to avoid this.

The reason is, I'm setting up and tuning a new computer for an elderly person and I'm trying to devise a way of creating daily restore points without any intervention on her part. So far I haven't had any success, even though I've tried everything I've found both here and on Seven Forums, especially the Task Scheduler method. I couldn't get that to work daily at 12:01 p.m, but the damn thing DID operate once only at 8:45 a.m on the day and time when I set it up. But not since.

This was why I asked about your modified vbs. I'm expecting this one would only require her to click a shortcut. Sure, it would require conscious action on her part but it's better than no SRPs at all.

Anyone know why setting up automated System Restore Points is so difficult in W10? All I can figure is that UAC is involved, but I don't want to turn that OFF because of security risks.

I'm an IT guy with over 20 years experience building and tuning computers, but I'm just about ready to consign this to the too-hard basket. *Confused

PS: And, in case anyone is wondering why I don't know more about W10, it's because I won't use it myself until MS dumps the automatic and compulsory updates. My six machines all run W7 with UAC and Updates turned OFF and my computing life is stress-free and uncomplicated.

The problem with having a restore point created automatically at startup is that it requires elevated rights.

Windows (since Vista) will not run anything elevated at startup by default for security reasons. Using Method Two with the new .vbs from step 3 will let you though if you like.

  5. Brink, you mean Barefoot Kid's method #2? Coupled with your modified VBS?

Well..I dunno. It was Method #2 that I couldn't get to work, (though not with your new vbs, obviously).

At around 8:30 a.m, several days ago, I set it up EXACTLY as described in his thread, and configured it to run at 12:01 p.m. daily. I closed down Task Scheduler and thought no more about it until the next afternoon. When I opened Task Scheduler to check if it had worked, it hadn't created an SRP at 12:01 p.m on that or the previous day but it HAD built one at 8:45 a.m on the day I set it up, which must have been about the time I closed out of Task Scheduler. I'm baffled, can't see any logic to that.

But ok, I'll delete the previous Schedule and try again with your new vbs.

    Cheers.

    Correct, but:

@ step 5, select Windows 10 for "Configure for" instead.

And of course the computer will have to be running at the scheduled time.

  7. Yep, did that at Step 5. And the machine is always on, it's not set to sleep.

Microsoft must know about this problem - I can't understand why they haven't fixed it.

I mean, it's a facility that is quite essential for maintaining the integrity of the OS.

It's almost as if they actually want users to operate without the backstop of System Restore Points.

OK, Brink, I understand your point about the security issue with a Startup SRP, but this is Microsoft's own system, after all. Their engineers designed and built it. I can't believe that they couldn't configure an automatic Restore Point system if they wanted to. Obviously, it';s not on the agenda.

Well, Windows does automatically create restore points just before significant system events, such as the installation of desktop apps and new Windows Updates, if the last restore point is older than seven days if no other restore points were created in the previous seven days.

Just not automatically on a schedule. That would be a nice feature add to the UI.

  9. I have one interesting problem besides having the manual shortcut on the go with the description option which does come in handy when you have a certain or certain groups of programs being tried out and you make a point or two before beginning. While it's scheduled it couldn't be set for create anyways even without user logged in.

Since no password was ever assigned only having a single admin account a permission issue prevented the second option at the bottom in 7 while this hasn't been tried on 10 so far. The automatic system restore point at startup is listed but simply won't budge since no user name and password appears as you might see with multiple accounts or an ISP requirement.

But there's at present a slight bug with the "MMC will not run with a version of IE earlier then 5.5" popping up from trying to clean IE off of the 7 side there and then putting it back fresh where that stalls. Not a concern however since 7 is gradually becoming the secondary spare OS while planning to still keep it going for the time being.

As for automatic restore points that accumulate one new will have to remove one old or that will soon become a hard drive full type situation if the allocated space reserved was suddenly exceeded. For any system that only sees light and occasion usage the automatic method would need to be toned down to once a week or even once a month while that isn't an option. When swapping programs and putting on updates more frequently that would be when you would want those extra points created.

  10. Nighthawk, I have no idea what you're trying to tell\ask us.

Can you condense your statement\question into a form that might be easier for us to understand?

The image there should be self explanatory with the options circled and being pointed to as being greyed out preventing one of them from being set according to the SF guide Layback Bear had posted. No security prompt appear for user name and password since the 7 install is booted into automatically. You would see that when having a password assigned with or without multiple user accounts.

The other problem interferring is from the more recent attempt to completely remove IE 11 and put that back on totally fresh having manually gone into the registy as well as deletion of folders for a fresh download. But 7 was due to a fresh install and that will server to refresh IE again back to 9 however until updated again to 11.

The option for description is the prompt I see now however when starting up as soon as you arrive at the desktop showing the task scheduled is working while the option for confirmation rather then needing to click to close the prompt seen each time is the better option for you! I simply have to make a new task for the other vbs file already onhand to see the message confirming a new point was created rather then the need to close out the prompt each time as that would be something you wouldn't want to be leaving your family member the task of taking care of. The desktop shortcut option would even be the better choice!
