Windows 10: Create Windows 10 installation media | This tool is very much outdated!

Trying to use this tool is a pain in the neck, first I got the spinning circle of death after a restart with pending cumulative 2019-04 updates, after battling with all sorts of DISM and recovery options with no avail, I ended up killing my hard-disk by abruptly hard booting just after the beautiful Win 10 logo a couple of times to get to 'preparing automatic repair' because F8 is disabled by default and getting to safe mode is a frustrating experience if you manage. In safe mode the update showed that it failed and undid itself and restarted. So now I wanted to run this tool 'media creation tool' to try and upgrade to the same edition Win Pro, but I see the useful options are grayed out and only 'keep nothing' which no one actually would want to do is left for me to choose. I know my PC is behind in updates so there is no way that this tool is correct in saying that I can't happily keep my files and apps because I'm trying to install an older version of Windows... that's crazy. I can bet this tool was last uploaded when the first version of Win 10 came out because the no. of people failing to keep their apps and files using this virtually last resort to properly fix Windows (except losing 400GB+ of sofware installs / apps by wiping the entire drive and spending a month trying to put everything back... probably to see the dreaded spinning circle of death yet again should there be a power cut while the PC is running). Please Microsoft if there is a cumulative update for 2019-04 kindly provide a matching 'media creation tool' and remove the old one from your site... this is really frustrating. I wonder how I will have to bear trying to convince my staff that Windows is better than linux because imagine the downtime having to reinstall everything and not getting the option to keep our apps and files!


You see, Win update says it's up to date, and that's incorrect. Win Insider settings won't let me control them even via gpedit or the registry, that's also broken, to even get the media tool to run I first had to run the SoftwareRepairTool, and stop it before the end because it updates the PC and the problems that were there before, like the broken Win Insider settings will be still waiting to bite you, in red.


All summed up: How do I force a Windows upgrade to the same edition with a guaranteed option to keep my many apps, programs and files without throwing my PC out the window please...

Windows 10 USB boot

Hi there, am not a windows 10 expert. I have a pc in the bedroom on windows 10, I messed up the bootloader trying to fix the xp on that system.

System wont boot, trying to repair via win 10 usb installer.

Downloaded the media creation tool to install windows 10 installer on usb stick. Not compatible with a host of usb sticks I have. Tried the usb sticks that others use, but I think they use rufus; as the media creation tool by win 10 does not detect the usb stick.

So quick question, the win10 machine i am trying to repair the bootloader is a win7 upgraded to win10.
If i were to use the usb win10 installer to "repair installation" does the version of the iso downloaded via the media creation tool matter?

There is three options:
Windows 10
Windows 10 Home
Windows 10 N

Also is there a step by step instead of using rufus as I want to try an alternative method of creating a usb win 10 installer. Preferably with more compatibility.

System is a asus sabertooth 990 (r2?) with AMD phenom X 6.

Also is there any other software I can load onto the usb that can repair the bootloader easily?
That would be the ideal alternative. Thanks

Microsoft software download website. To create an installation or repair media, follow the steps below:

• On a working PC, go to the
  Microsoft software download website.
• Download the media creation tool and then run it. You need to be an administrator to run this tool.
  
• Select Create installation media for another PC.
• Choose a language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit).
• Follow the steps to create installation media, and then select Finish.

Windows 10 install "S" WTF

I just created install media like 2-3 weeks ago (still September FCU to my disappointment) and Windows 10 S wasn't even an option in the list. I don't know how you ended up with S in the first place because that's pretty much restricted to OEMs selling bargain-bin tablets.

Use Media Creation Tool and have it write directly to USB itself. Shouldn't have any problems as long as you can get the machine to boot to it.


Windows 10 S is basically Microsoft's answer to ChromeOS.
