    Credentials Manager... a general question.

I discovered the 'Credential Manager' in W10 for the first time today... and I'm puzzled. I use MS Edge as my only browser and have many sites (such as this one) set up as a favourite and with login details stored by Edge. So far so good. And everything works, there is no problem as such.

Anyhow, I'm puzzled as to why I only see handful of sites in the Credential Manager when all sites have login details stored. For example 7/8/10 forums are absent, a vBulletin site I use is present, another vBulletin site is not and so on. Part of my bank login details are there *Eek

So how does this thing work and what determines what goes in there.

    :)

Thanks for the link on Edge Phil, really useful *Smile The more I use Edge and the more I am liking it.

Now then... I've just today finished setting up a clean W10 install for a friend and I've used only Edge, with IE never having even been opened, and yet some passwords are appearing in the Credential Manager. It seems there is some sharing of locations going on, but no rhyme or reason as to what is the deciding factor.

    A bit more info...

I've looked at the saved passwords in Edge (using the Tut Phil suggested) and the passwords there match exactly with those in the Credential Manager). There is no tenforums password in there, in fact only six of around thirty to forty site details are showing.

I'm wondering, is this really a cookie issue with the site itself holding the details and simply recognising the PC in question via a cookie ?

You raise an interesting question and I have also noticed crossover between the two browsers. What I think is going on is a sharing of data via the Microsoft account. Settings, including passwords are synched between devices via the MS account (using part of OneDrive. I think). I am convinced the passwords synched from IE are also being accessed by Edge and possibly the other way around. Would be glad if you can confirm it. There are other cases where as you say cookies hold data which allows usernames (and possibly passwords?) to be remembered.

    Credentials Manager... a general question.

Hmmm, dunno on that one... my PC and the one of my friend are both set up using local accounts. In the past I tried clearing ALL browsing history from IE via Internet Options in control panel but nothing changed. And of course IE has never been used for real on the PC anyway.

So if your setup did not involve MS accounts then my theory is shot down, there must be a straightforward link between the two browsers and they share common features of the W10 operating system.
