Windows 10: Ctrl key not working: producing two beeps, strange behaviour

Hi

Suddenly my Ctrl key is behaving strangely. I found out while trying to use the Ctrl+c combination. On pressing Ctrl I get two short beeps and strange behaviour: in Chrome browser it will jump to previous tab, in Word it will insert a new column. I have tried all the obvious - check keyboard set up, restart, check accessibility settings, etc. I have run Malware Bytes. My Kaspersky anti virus flags nothing.

This represents a real problem for me as my work involves Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v the whole time.

At the same time I noticed that the Windows taskbar is no longer fully functional: if I type in say, "uninstall" it'll bring up "Change or remove a program" and if I click on that nothing happens...

Keyboard action for @ is reversed with "

I have two user accounts on my PC. One is for me and one is for my friend, who visits occasionally.

I have a Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600.

I am running Windows 10.

Whenever I am in my login the Shift 2 produces the @ symbol and the
Shift ' produces the " symbol, just as is to be expected from what is marked on the keyboard.

Unfortunately whenever my friend is logged in these two Shifted key operations act in reverse, so to say, i.e.
Shift 2 produces the " and Shift ' produces the @.

I have had a look around in Keyboard, and in Regional Settings, within Control Panel, but I cannot locate anything that would explain this strange behaviour.

Microsoft Edge interactive controls

These various improvement are required:

1. Page Up and Page Down do not work correctly on some sites, e.g., load a page that produces a scroll bar on the right. Page down does not always keep scrolling, and at that point neither page up or page down do anything.

2. Similar to point #1 the Home and End key do not scroll always the page to the top or bottom.

3. Pressing Ctrl-select on a web link will open a new tab, but sometime that new tab will be the next tab to the right and sometimes at the right of all other tabs. Inconsistent behaviour.

4. Edge seems more sensitive to two-finger scrolling than other programs and often treats it an open pinch and increases the view for the page. Have to press Ctrl-minus to shrink the page. Sometime a pinch of the trackpad does not work.

 

Sounds a bit like a stuck key combo or macro running to me.

 

I don't think there are any stuck keys as far as I can tell. Using Key Tweak I remapped the Windows key to Ctrl. Now the Win button works perfectly as a Ctrl Key, including with combinations such as Ctrl+c etc. I am not sure what that says about the "bust" Ctrl key though...
As for Macros, I have never used them.
