I think the thing is the command prompt window will start saying files not found, files copied and the installer will claim complete but what do you launch exactly as there is nothing in c:\windows\system32 other than gpedit.dll when I search for it.

I have gpedit.msc in that folder. Have you tried typing gpedit.msc in the search bar? If you don't find it there, I can always provide it for you and put it in the Windows/system32 folder and try it. Although I am afraid, if the setup gives errors, there is a problem. I did not receive errors

gpedit.msc doesn't exist. There are no errors in the GUI of the setup as that part finish fine. It's the command prompt window that starts with files not found and then you can see it successfully copying things, too bad there isn't a way to log that window to see exactly what it says as it will close itself pretty fast.

  5. Oh, what fun: The Rescue Disk repair function tries to analyze and repair my copy of Windows 10, only to fail, stating that it cannot do that. I do wonder what the next thing I ought to do might be?

Assuming that one or more helpful people respond to this plea, I must warn them that, before following their instructions, I will very likely have more questions for which I need replies, as I suspect that whatever is suggested will be something(s) that I have never done. For example, I have not once tried to backup everything and replace an OS, and don't know how to do that. I can easily backup folders, but have not the slightest idea as to how one would back up and reinstall programs for which one does not have CD/DVD media.

@Rolly13 - did a in-place upgrade install as my Start Menu stopped working... but I think I figured out why the gpedit.msc didn't work initially as it's probably the same as this:

How To Enable Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) In Windows 10 Home Edition

where after running the .exe program...
    Installing gpedit.msc correctly
If you have 32-bit Windows (x86) then the setup should install smoothly without any problems and you should be able to access the Group Policy Editor through the Microsoft
Management Console by going to Run –> gpedit.msc. But if you have 64-bit Windows (x64) then you will need some extra steps after running the installer. Follow the steps
    below after running the installer:
Copy “GroupPolicy”, “GroupPolicyUsers” and gpedit.msc from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to C:\Windows\System32

as the gpedit.msc they provide is identical to yours with the garbled chinese. *Wink

Yeah, basically the installer installs to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 and one needs to copy the three things to C:\Windows\system32 before it works.

I did not see that update in my CP but when I tried to install it, I got a pop up saying it is already installed. Now I am thinking that it was part of a bigger update and not a separate one.
