I think it's a release preview - MS may or may not push it through windows update next week. They seem to do this a lot and not necessarily send it to Windows update. You'll prob find the next cumulative update that comes down the normal way will be an even later version. It's good to be kept informed via the forum but the insider, release preview etc does get confusing. Personally I wait for Windows update all the time. Like you I am careful about what happens and don't want any pre release / insider stuff on the machine. These types of updates I am sure are fine and always sound like they work well though. I just prefer to avoid as much risk as possible

 

True. While I know that Microsoft has a solid track record on patches, especially in recent years, I always hold my breath when I run them.

Really.. its' from MS and I installed it and I'm not having a single issue. This KB is not for insiders it's for users with version 10586.

 

I wish I had the time - my wife hates me spending too much time on the computer - so updates and then any glitches that may arise become most unwelcome. I know deep down I need to stay updated but kind of wish they didn't happen so often. The tech world moves too fast!!! *Smile

I'll wait for Windows Update to offer it. I was just initially concerned that it should of been coming down the pipe in that way and wondered if something was up on my PC for not finding it. Now I know it's manual download only I am happy to let it pass

Funny that you should mention that, because although my wife is computer literate, my retired parents are not. I live near them, and usually help them with computer issues. I just upgraded them to windows 10 a couple of months ago, so if a bad patch ever came out it would affect them too. They don't have Pro, and wouldn't know how to defer patches anyways.

 

I get the same issues trying to help my family out. They all think I am Bill Gates or something and can sort anything out. Whilst I know my way around the PC and have a semi decent home network I am reasonably proud of, their assertions couldn't be further than the truth. I just google issues like mad to try and solve them without necessarily understanding. But of course if something bad comes out from MS it affects more than just me but I end up having to try and fix it all for several people. It's the same with the iOS devices they own too. So between MS, Apple and Adobe putting out updates seemingly everytime the wind blows it doesn't give me an awful lot of peace. I seem to spend more time on updates/checking than actually using the computers/devices!!!

Sorry guys, gone way off topic. The main thing here is thanks to Clusterhead it's good to know of the availability of this KB to update for those that want, it's also re-assuring that this was not intended for normal windows updates and nothing is amiss my windows update check. Plus the fact that people are reporting it's a safe download with no unintended side affects. *Smile

Yes that's the problem. When friends and relatives have a PC then you're not allowed near it.
Once they have problems and you agree to fix it, you are only allowed to touch it when it's broken and then you become PC Repair Man and get called in for every little hiccup *Smile

Also, Clusterhead, I installed the latest patch just a little while ago and no issues to report. Seems to be fine.
