since the anniversary update last year, every cummulative update fails. The only solution for the education version is to do a new setup with keeping personal data and apps. What a drag, W10

It is better to do it manually, disk cleanup performs /StartComponentCleanup, you can add /ResetBase, which cleans more, but you will not be able to uninstall any update. Check my WC.bat (removes restore points as well) or run this:

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

I also use Wise Disk Cleaner, which slims the space by removing cached files from %WINDIR%\Installer, DO NOT remove this folder's content manually, unless you know, what you are doing!

    Hi,

So many users are so afraid to remove unneeded files.
    MS should educate them.

    Cheers, *Wink

Windows Update showed KB3213986 update available and "downloading updates 90%" when I powered on this morning; I didn't get "ready to install" until sometime after 6:00 p.m. It took half an hour or so to install what turned out to be the malicious software removal tool. WU then displayed a new message that KB3213986 updates were ready to download. I have no idea what was going on all day. Once I started this download, it took about an hour and the installation took another half hour with one restart. So far no issues.

These updates failed with error code 0x80246002 on my husband's HP laptop; haven't checked that out yet. Always an adventure.

Update for HP: I ran the WU Troubleshooter as administrator. It found and fixed four problems, after which the updates downloaded and installed in about an hour with no problems.

I had problem of being stuck in downloading updates for each cumulative update until I figured out that i should disable my antivirus before getting updates. After that i disable the antivirus and no more problem with any update. My antivirus is NOD32

After this update the reliability monitor does not load. It gets stuck in generating the report. Does anyone else have this problem?

I just notice something strange. I have been running Malwarebytes Pro since the first installation of Windows 10 in July 2015. It has always run side by side with Windows Defender. After starting my office laptop this morning with the update build 14393.693 installed on Tuesday, I notice that Windows Defender Real Time Protection was turned off. It told me another anti-virus program had taken over and I was not able to turn it back on. Malwarebytes 3.0.5.1299 Pro is the only other virus application I use so I decided to uninstall it and see if there was a change. My system froze during the start of the uninstall and required a hard "Power Button" restart.

When the system restarted. both Malwarebytes and Windows Defender were fully functional. I have never seen this happen before and am wondering if anyone else has seen this problem.

Not with Malwarebytes, but Symantec Endpoint Protection I use. Simply had to un- and reinstall it. But SEP isn't designed to run side by side, it turns Defender off.

Re using Disk Cleanup after these big 'Patch Tuesday' updates, in an earlier post on this thread someone added image of their Disk Cleanup dialog box which showed "Windows Update Cleanup 3.99 TB". I have the same amount showing - surely this should read 3.99 GB? I got fed up using the various tweaks and methods to get rid of these files (because Disk Cleanup takes ages or just never finishes) and I now find that if I just wait a couple of weeks after the updates then they will delete quickly using Disk Cleanup. It seems to need several re-boots and shut-downs of machine before it sorts itself and then they delete quickly.

No. There actually are 3.99TB of ntfs file entries that can be removed (probably more, 3.99TB seems to be the highest it can count to). That doesn't mean the files concerned occupy that much disk space. The vast majority of the ntfs files found by Cleanup are hard links, multiple entries that all point to a single physical copy of the file. More here...

  15. Maybe just a tiny conflict. I always learned from others: don't run two virus programs at one time in case of conflicts...
