Same thing for me, stuck at 3% but for 2 to maximum 3 minutes and then it started preparing for install and after a minute it was ready to restart pc. Restart was smooth, took 1 to 2 minutes to install and all seems ok.

  2. Mine is frozen at 3%, also.

  3. Mine was stuck at 3% for 20 minutes. I then realized that the Edge Browser was running. Closed it, and 2 minutes later the download continued and was finished 10 minutes later. Will do a manual restart later tonight.

As with some updates over recent months, this one was only found when I did a manual "check for updates" today.

    OK dumb user question...
Running desktop w10 64bit that's current with WU.
Yesterday WU reported that my PC was current with Windows Updates.
This morning - 4:30AM Monday - I clicked on WU thinking there might be a new anti-virus def to be installed and was surprised to see KB4040724 begin to download. I was thinking that these big MS updates only came out on Tuesdays - maybe once or twice a month... So what's with this update going on right now?
btw-it's now awaiting my re-boot - which I'll do next..

Guess yours was a little late, as most of us got that update on 9/25/17 *Smile

Well, my install history shows that on Tuesday 9/12 cumulative KB4038788 was installed.. That was the 2nd Tuesday in September.

btw - after re-boot WU now shows me at 1703 15063.632

And 1 more dumb user question - You said most users installed KB4040724 back on 9/25. That was the last Monday of the month - not a Tuesday. So when does MS really put out these big updates??

When they are ready for release! Patch Tuesday is not a rule or law, it just happens that most updates come that day. None of us should really care what day or when they come, as long as they come often enough but not too often. If some serious security flaw is found and there is a fix that required huge rewrite/revision of a lot of components, I'd rather receive the fix the same day or as soon as possible, than having to wait for it for a month.

No, but it is normal practice to collect together all the minor fixes and security updates and release them once a month. However, when a 'patch Tuesday' release introduces a bug (as September's did) an 'out of band' update may well be rolled out as soon as the fix is available. If it's a serious bug but only affects a small number of users it will only be made available through the update catalog. Typically the fixes issued this way are for business-critical functions that most of us don't use.

When its a bug that affects most users it will be rolled out through windows update. This update fixes an Edge bug that everyone saw after Patch Tuesday's KB4038788.

    Again. Thanks!
Is there some way that I can or should mark this post as solved?

btw - KB4040724 went on in about 10 minutes yesterday and has not caused me any problems. But I seldom use Edge

I don't think threads in the News forum can be marked 'solved' anyway. Can't 'Rep' them either.

KB4040724 has twice failed to install in my Win 10 pro 64 bit desktop on 9-27-2017 but did install in my laptop Win 10 home 64 bit, just fine. I used the reliability control panel app to check this and the issue is not listed there even though update history shows it failed twice on this date. Any way to attempt to install again without downloading it. I have a 12gb cap per month. Tired of getting up in the middle of the night to download during my freezone. My update settings are set to get updates from my network computers but I have yet to see this actually happen since 1603 came out. The desktop is set to a metered connection and the laptop is unmetered to allow it to download the latest CU's. Both are set to share updates. I am current 1703 and thru the last CU(15063.608) on this desktop unit while the laptop is at .632. Does the WU repair tool work on Win 10? Thanks for any help!
