Windows 10: Cumulative Update KB4073290 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.194 - 64-bit

I downloaded and installed this KB4073290 on my 10 year old Athlon 64 X2 Socket AM2 machine and it worked fine. My computer was one of those which became unbootable after Windows Update tried to install KB4056892 on January's Patch Tuesday.

I believe that this update is only available from the Microsoft Catalog (link on the first post of this thread), and will not be found by Windows Update, at least not until the next Cumulative Update is released in February, which will supersede this update.

You should download and install this before unhiding KB4056892, or unpausing updates on Windows Update.

I had another unbootable AMD PC yesterday. I was able to resurrect it by booting the w10 installation iso and using System Restore to December 29th 2017.

 

This update is confusing. I've currently blocked/hidden KB4056892 on two AMD PCs otherwise this update makes them unbootable. One PC has a Socket 939 motherboard and the other an AM2 motherboard.

Another post on the forum advises installing KB4073290 which overrides KB4056892 and WU should no longer find the offending KB4056892. MS should have clarified this in their release notes.

 

+1 no issue with the updates on my Intel.

 

No issues to report on AMD FX-8350, Phenom II 905E, Phenom II 1045T, or ancient Intel Core2Duo E8400 based systems.

 

Would not install on AMD Athlon II X2 250e.

 

Thanks for the reply unfortunately, I didn't have system restore on, (my fault for that) I had originally got it back up after doing the DISM commands to remove the upadte, but when I wasn't paying attention for a few hours, it installed the update again. Then next reboot, got the error again. I removed package again, but now I am stuck in this restart loop.

 

I don't see an update for 32 bit Windows 10 AMD PCs. Are we stuffed or is there a 32 bit update available?

Currently, KB4073290 is for 64-bit only. No word about a 32-bit version.

 

Thanks - that means my old AMD PC is stuffed for now since it won't support 64 bit Windows 10.

I certainly hope they are working on a 32 bit fix as I have one system that will need it!

 

After last week's fiasco with KB4056892, I'd restored my old clunker of an AMD to Winver 1709 (OS Build 16299.125) FYI - it's an Athlon 64 Dual core 5200+ with a massive 2GB memory!!!!!! Stop laughing.....it's just a test box that someone gave me a couple of years ago. *Cool

I had also set the following after my earlier restore:

Semi-Annual Channel
Feature update delay from 200 to 365 days
Quality update delay from 0 to 30 days
Network METERED

So today:

Was offered and allowed KB4058043: Microsoft Store reliability update and routine updates to download and install

From MS Update Catalog site, Manually installed KB 4073290
Restart requested - restarted no problem Yay! *chuckle
Now on Winver 1709 (OS Build 16299.194) - Double Yay! *chuckle *chuckle
Check for updates - device up to date

Set to:
Semi-Annual Channel
Feature update delay set to 0 days
Quality update delay set to 0 days
Network UN METERED
Check for updates - Routine updates (Flash & Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool downloaded and installed)
Check for updates - device up to date
Checked Event Viewer - nothing untoward

Restarted again - just to be sure!
Check for updates - device up to date

Set to my standard settings:
Semi-Annual Channel
Feature update delay set to 200 days
Quality update delay set to 30 days
Network set to METERED
Job done - time for a *Drink1

 

Apparently there's something for AMD x86 already, but it isn't even found by update at the moment:

Our Toshiba is probably about same age. I can't find the release I read that said older AMD processors would only be addressed 3 weeks or so after the initial fix. But I did read that somewhere.
I had to do a complete clean install to get over the no-boot problem. As a result, there should be no KB4056892 on the computer. It is Windows 10 Home, so I don't think Windows Update could have been paused?

At this stage, I don't see any reason to install the update. If MS are blocking the update to our computer, that is fine with us. It works as it is. I don't trust Microsoft to get this right, so would not do the install unless I had a 100% copy of existing install on a separate hard drive that I could swap in if they screw system up again. Besides, after fighting this since before Christmas, I am just tired and totally fed up with Microsoft.
