All went smoothly here. Disk Clean-up took a long time, but not unusually so.

Comparing the rate of replies here to the similar threads for the 1703, 1607, et. al. 18-03 cumulative updates, we must all be on 1709 now *Smile

  2. Scary install, with a nice recovery:

    1. I noticed that the update for Defender AntiVirus was pending, so left the room.

    2. Returned, saw update still pending, discovered that computer was locked up.

    3. With trepidation, shut down and restarted computer; after the expected gyrations, chose to have Windows 10 reloaded normally.

    4. Next thing that I saw, after expected black screens, etc. was that the update was at 100% , and working. Knowing that that was impossible, having never seen the first part of the update (where you get a restart at around 32%,) I left room to await further steps.

    5. Came back, found that the update install had, somehow, started again (assuming that the previous 100% report was about the install,) and was nearing the restart at approximately 32%.

    6. Left, came back, computer was at lock screen. Somewhat dreading what I might find, I entered my password, and waited. Desktop appeared, followed by some unusual reloadings of all the desktop icons. I waited until most of the restart was complete before doing anything further.

7 Lastly, checked, and to my relief, found that the update had been successfully installed.

    8. Windows Update was checking, eventually found the Antivirus update that had been pending, and that installed.

audentes fortuna iuvat: From Virgil, Aeneid, "fortune favors the bold." I was bold enough (which might well be worded otherwise) to press the power switch, and was favored by forturne.

My computer seeming to have recuperated with no apparent problems caused by the lockup, went to my wife's computer, where the cumulative update worked with no problems.

  5. Dear Bassariscus astutus:

Ah, yes, I am certainly a "Scaredy-cat": As a retired fire chief, college prep school teacher, technical climbing instructor, wilderness canoe and backpacking trip leader, a married man with one now-adult son, user of MS Windows, and other such, I've been in my share (and likely more than my share) of frightening situations.

Installed the update on four systems in the office without incident so far. Relatively painless.

Caution is always a good trait to have *Smile

  10. Hi,
Kind of lazy to rely on MS roll back to put humpy dumpy back together again *Smile

I shoot an image of every machine every night using MR. Can always go back to yesterday if needs must. Updated 4 of 5 PCs on the Current Branch release. "The Boss" is using her machine right now, so I'll start updating when she heads into the kitchen to start dinner in about half an hour. So far, so good: no issues on any those PCs.

Every Monday morning, Macrium Reflect makes a full backup; each day, including Monday but later, Reflect makes an update of whatever has changed in the past 24 hours.

Once a day, Restore Point Creator creates a new Restore Point.

Finally, I make a copy in my scriptorium.... (My academic background is in Medieval Studies.)

I do an image backup a couple of restarts after a new update ... that way I don't end up with a pending update in my backup *Smile

I currently don't make significant changes to the OS. If I did, that's a new image. My data is a separate and backed up separately.

  15. Several months ago, I turned off the option to have Windows download updates from PC's on my home network (only 2 of us), or PC's elsewhere on the internet. Since doing that, I have received ZERO monthly updates. Just the usual Defender and Malicious tool downloads automatically.

Clicking on "Check for Updates" doesn't find any of the KG/Quality updates either. After a day or two, I just use the direct download link that's at the start of each monthly thread here.

Could having that "Get updates from other PC's" option turned OFF, be the culprit?
