    Hi folks,

cumulative updates will not install. Other updates do install without a problem... so WU itself is working..

I run sfc which brought some errors, which could not be corrected. CBS log is attached.

Would not want to reinstall as this PC has some specialised software..

    thx in advance

    :)

Windows 10 Cumulative Updates Will Not Install

A little trick I thought up.

If you have not cleaned out your Download Folder copy it off to another drive or a USB stick and then after reinstalling Windows copy it back and use it to reinstall your downloaded programs instead of hunting all over the Internet.

  3. Windows 10 Cumulative Updates Will Not Install

PowerShell was damaged by a virus. I
eliminated the virus, but cumulative updates still would not install. The solution for me was to completely re-install Windows 10. I did not trust myself to do that without losing programs and apps, so I took
my computer to a shop. I lost only a couple of programs and apps that I really didn't want anyway. The one program package that I did have to reload was Microsoft Office, but I had the CD for it, so that was no problem.
After the Windows 10 re-installation, all is well. If you are confident in doing the re-installation, you can do it yourself using software that exists on your computer. But, be sure that you can reload important
apps, files, and programs that are not a part of Windows 10 that you could lose during the process. It is really not as complicated as I thought.

Hello, what error message (exact text please) do you get when the update fails?

Given your concerns about maintaining the state of your PC, have you started using disk imaging yet- which allows you to restore your PC to a previous working state when you encounter problems, and may save you reinstalling Windows?

Have you run chkdsk to verify your file system?
    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

Some find that repeating sfc /scannow a couple of times with a restart between solves the problem.

    =================================
If this reports a failure, then the following downloads new files
Open a Powershell window and at the prompt type (or copy and paste)
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press <Return>.

    Again, be patient.

Finally, post back the result, after checking your symptoms.

If that fails, the next option would be an in-place upgrade repair install- which keeps your programs.

  5. Hi,

I appreciate taking the time to respond.

I do not recall specific error. After rebooting to update, it tries to.. then says "reverting changes".. and then in the update history - Failed to update (see attached screenshot)

chckdsk did not return any errors after reboot

Second sfc scan again reports problems were not repaired.

I am now trying the last command you've posted. .. I will get back with the results..

Hi, recommend you attempt an in-place upgrade repair install.
Do you already have a build 1511 iso or bootable medium? If not you'll need one. Use this:
Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool

An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed, and x64 if you have a 64 bits OS, else x86 (32 bits).

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
    - this includes a link from which you can obtain Windows 10 iso file (" download a Windows 10 ISO"), or create a bootable medium.

I would recommend creating the bootable medium, as this can be used
    - for any future in-place upgrade repair install
    - to boot from and use its recovery options should Windows become unbootable.
    - to clean install Windows

This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
    - all/most associations will be unchanged
    - all your programs will be left installed
    - no personal data should be affected
    - you will lose any custom fonts
    - you will lose any customised system icons
    - you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
    - you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
    - Windows.old will be created
    - system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
    - you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)
    - inactive title bar colouring (if used) will be reset to default
    - if Qttabbar is installed, you need to re-enable it in explorer (Options, check Qttabbar)
This is one of the better features of Win10: as each major build comes out, that's your updated reference build, and as updates are mostly cumulative, there will be few to do.

    Recommendation:
Before you perform this major repair procedure, do create a disk image.

Please consider using disk imaging regularly. It's a brilliant way to
    - preserve your system (and your sanity)
    - back up your data
    - restore your system to a previously working state in a relatively short time

Recommended: Macrium Reflect (free/commercial) + boot disk/device + large enough external storage medium.
