currently i am using windows 2012 server. while doing in-place upgrade getting this error "Windows 10 Setup couldn't start properly. Please reboot you PC and try running setup again."

In Place upgrade from server 2012 r2 to Server 2019

Hello,

I am running server 2012 r2 standard and I am hoping to upgrade to server 2019 without losing my settings (server 2012 is our DNS, AD, DHCP)

I did some reading and to do an in place upgrade you need to upgrade to 2016 then to 2019.

I have an image of 2016 but it's an evaluation iso.

When I run the 2016 ISO I only have the option for a clean install and not an upgrade.

Is it because my 2012 is retail and 2016 is evaluation?

I don't want to purchase a retail copy of 2016 just to upgrade to 2019.

Am I missing something?

IF you want to try seizing the FSMO roles to see if it will help, here is a quick guide (this should be done on the DC you want to keep):

Knowing that this is a DC now I'm really convinced that something is wrong with the AD account for this particular server. It's possible that the promotion to a DC didn't work correctly leaving you with a sort of broken DC.

A reboot is always worth a shot; has that been tried Ahhzz? If it has, then the next step would be to demote this DC and rejoin it to the domain. Once rejoined you can run DCPromo again. Microsoft best practice is to have at least 2 DCs for redundancy.

 

server 2008 r2 inplace upgrade to 2012 r2 essentials?

I have less than 5 users, so I'd like to go to an essentials license when get off of 2008. I see all these docs about moving ro srndard from essentials, but can I do an in place upgrade to a 2012 ( or by steps to 2016 and use a essentials server license?
Or must this be a new install?
