Windows 10: Cursor speed increasing despite no direct user action

I'm using a gamepad (DS4) to control my desktop experience on a HTPC, and yesterday I noticed my cursor speed seemed to increase on its own.

The DS4 software I'm using does not have a setting to adjust cursor speed in a live setting, outside of its configuration options.

It seems to be related to a W10 feature I haven't seen before - via settings > devices > mouse, there's a cursor speed setting going from 1 to 20, with unclear, unlabelled sub-increments between whole values (which is very poor design, BTW).

I think this setting is at play because when I saw it yesterday, it was set to 16. I set it to 10, which seemed close enough to what the cursor speed was previously. But today I noticed the speed was higher again - and this time, when I checked it again it was set to 14.

Evidently, there's some factor that's increasing this cursor speed value without deliberate, direct user action.

What would do this, and how can I prevent it from happening again?

Change the cursor speed for Precision touchpad

I understand that you want to set the cursor speed value more than 20. The valid range of values for the registry key that you want are trying to change is 0 to 20, with a default value of 10.



Note: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow
these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

However, to increase the cursor speed you can change the mouse settings in Control Panel. Please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Press Windows key + R, to open
   Run dialog box.
   
2. Type control and click on
   OK.
   
3. Select Large icons from the drop down for
   View by.
   
4. Click on Mouse.
   
5. Navigate to Pointer options tab and under
   Motion, move the slider towards right to change the cursor speed.
   
6. Click on Apply and OK.
