Windows 10: Custom keyboard layouts broken with April 2025 update?

I just purchased a new system and currently has Windows 11 23H2 build 22631.5189.I tried installing the Russian student layout found here. The built in Russian Phonetic layout is missing at least 4 letters.Anyway, the layout installs, but I try to use it Windows Explorer crashes and takes me back to the previous layout.A friend could use the layout without issue. He has build 22631.5039. The difference between the two is KB5055528 which I have installed. My friend installed it and he also lost the keyboard. When we both uninstalled it, the keyboard started working again.I also have a prompt t

Custom Keyboard Layouts in Windows 11

A wonderful day everyone,

Previously I have used the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator to create custom keyboard layouts, however not only is Windows 11 not listed as a supported operating system, but I cannot use the installed keyboards as they get shrugged off as "Unavailable input method" and are also unselectable as they break the taskbar language button in strange ways.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how one can create a functioning keyboard layout for Windows 11? It'd be much appreciated.

This suggests to me that you are using the wrong "keyboard language" for your keyboard, and that therefore you first step would be to determine exactly what language keyboard you have. Possibly have a look at Windows Keyboard Layouts - Globalization | Microsoft Docs.

(The age of any laptop capable of running Windows 10 at all should not be a problem as regards keyboard layout)

 

Wrong keyboard layout in login page after update to 1607

Hi,

Since the issue reoccurred after updating to anniversary update, I suggest you to reconfigure the QWERTY keyboard layout and check if the same issue persists. This is to check if the issue is with Windows 10 1607 update.

I suggest you to follow the steps below to configure the keyboard layout:

• Open Settings and click on Time and Language.
• Click on Region and Language.
• Add the Country and click on add a language and select the language of your choice.
• This will take time to download the pack.
• Once this is done, Press Windows key + Space and press Space key to choose the keyboard layout.
