Windows 10: Dark Mode finally makes its way to Windows Community Toolkit Sample App

Windows Community Toolkit Sample App is a one-stop shop for Windows 10 developers to get the latest and greatest functions, controls and services for their apps. The app has been out there for a while now and has been massively popular among Windows developers as well as the enthusiast crowd. However, there was this one thing that it always lacked – dark mode!

Today, Microsoft started rolling out an update to the Windows Community Toolkit that bumped up the version to 4.0.3. With all the other enhancements, this update also brings Dark Mode to the app.

Users have lately been demanding for dark-mode everywhere within the apps that they use. With nicer aesthetics, dark-mode also has its practical benefits with being less eye-straining while using at night or in any dark environment. Professional productivity apps like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator has had dark-mode for ages now due to overnight usage by its users.

It looks like the silicon valley is finally listening to its users. Microsoft is testing dark-mode in file explorer in Windows 10 Redstone 5 which is due this fall. Google has already rolled out dark-mode in YouTube. Even Apple is testing system-wide dark-mode in MacOS Mojave.

Although, Windows 10 already had a system-wide switch to dark-mode but it was (and still is) very inconsistent with some parts of the OS remaining unchanged. Even some of the UWP apps never switched to dark-mode with Windows Community Toolkit Sample App being among them.

Nevertheless, it’s good to see Windows Community Toolkit finally catching up with this trend and will surely impress its users.

People Love Dark Themes

Users everywhere have different tastes and expectations but dark themes have become surprisingly popular these days. The majority of software makers such as Apple and Microsoft have already launched them for most of their apps.

Microsoft has launched dark visual for a number of pre-installed Windows 10 core apps including the Settings app and it’s also coming to the File Explorer later this year. A dark mode in all apps and tools is among the top feature requests from Windows 10 users, and Microsoft is fully aware of this.

New name for UWP Community Toolkit: Windows Community Toolkit

I’m really excited to announce, starting with the next major release, the UWP Community Toolkit will have a new name – the Windows Community Toolkit. This is a huge milestone for the toolkit and the community that has made this project possible.

The toolkit was first released over a year and a half ago with 26 different features. Since then, we’ve added five new packages over nine new releases, each one adding new controls, helpers, services, extensions, object models and more – most coming from the community directly. Today, there are over 100 distinct features. Just compare the number of controls (and categories) in the sample app from the initial release:

When we initially released the UWP Community Toolkit, we received feedback that developers want to share toolkit components with other frameworks such as WPF, WinForms, Xamarin, .NET Core, and more. In v2.0, with the help of the community, we identified components that could be factored out in .NET Standard libraries and created new .NET Standard packages so more developers could take advantage of the community work – and many did. Many of the services, helpers, and parsers are cross platform today and can be used anywhere – and we are working to enable even more.

Enabling more developers is what the toolkit is all about, so starting with the next Windows Community Toolkit release, we are setting a goal to enable more Windows developers working on Windows 10 experiences to take advantage of toolkit components where possible. Therefore, the new name is reflective of this increased focus and more inclusive of all Windows developers.

The community is working enthusiastically towards the next major toolkit update, currently scheduled for late May. All the work is done in the open and we invite any developer to participate and contribute. To get started with the latest and greatest today, visit the GitHub repository and dive into the code. Or if you rather use NuGet packages, preview packages will be published on NuGet right on time for the Microsoft Build conference. We will update the documentation and the sample app at the same time but keep in mind these are pre-release packages and they might change for the final release.

Here’s a summary of what’s new in V1.1:

.NET Foundation. We are excited to announce that the UWP Community Toolkit has joined the .NET Foundation, a vibrant community of open-sourced projects focused on the future of the .NET ecosystem.

Updates and new features. The focus of this release is to improve the quality of the toolkit by addressing feedback we received through GitHub and the Store Sample App. Full list available in the Release Notes, including:

Services: added LinkedIn service (i.e. read user profile and share activity), Microsoft Graph service (i.e. send and read emails from UWP via Office 365 or explore Azure Active Directory graph) and updates to the Facebook and Bing services

Controls: added Blade, GridSplitter and DropShadowPanel controls

Animations: new FadeHeaderBehavior

Sample app. The UWP Community Toolkit Sample App has been updated to include the new features of this release. The Sample App is the best way to preview the features of the toolkit.

Documentation. As the project joins the .NET Foundation, we moved the documentation to a new location, directly connected to GitHub.

Announcing UWP Community Toolkit 1.3

The UWP (Universal Windows Platform) Community Toolkit continues to grow at a rapid speed thanks to the ideas and contributions from the community. Over the last period, over 82 percent of the contributions came from the developer community (59 contributors). Thank you!Today, we are happy to announce the largest update to the toolkit since the launch a few months ago!

You can get started following these steps, or preview the latest features by installing the UWP Community Toolkit Sample App from the Windows Store.

As a reminder, the toolkit can be used in any app (across PC, Xbox One, Mobile, HoloLens and Surface Hub devices) targeting Windows 10 November Update (10.0.10586) or above. The few features that rely on newer OS updates are clearly marked in the documentation and in the Sample App.

Here’s just a summary of what’s new in Version 1.3:

Controls. Several new controls were added in this release, including some very popular requests from the community:

WrapPanel. Positions child elements in sequential position from left to right or top to bottom, breaking content to the next line.

TextboxMask and TextBoxRegex (attached properties). Allows setting common or custom masks (like telephone numbers) for input.

SurfaceDialTextboxHelper (attached property). Extends any Textbox control to be controlled directly from a Surface Dial.

MarkdownTextBlock. Embeds and renders in real-time markdown syntax.

TileControl. Enables repeatable tile content.

ScrollHeader. Builds upon FadeHeader and enables Quick Return, Sticky and Fade behaviors.

Expander. Provides an extendable container to show/hide any content by clicking the header.

AdvancedCollectionView: Builds upon CollectionView and easily sorts and filters collections before displaying them.

Loading control. Shows an animation with some content when the user should wait in some tasks of the app.

Services

OneDrive service. Roam user files through the new OneDrive service with a simplified API model (similar to StorageFolder). The new service makes it easy to authenticate OneDrive users and more in the same consistent way you have come to expect from the toolkit services.

Microsoft Translator Service. Translate text in 60 languages supported by Microsoft Translator Services. The free tier supports up to 2 million requests per month.

We’ve added support for geographical metadata to tweets.

Animations

Light. Add light effects to your page or controls to draw user attention.

Reorder grid animations (attached property). Add smooth animations when resizing a grid view.

ParallaxService. Allows to create a parallax effect for items contained within an element that scrolls like a ScrollViewer or ListView.

Notifications

New toast features. Allows group toasts notifications (only available on Creator Update).

Accessibility. With the support of the community, we started the journey to add accessibility capabilities to all the controls in the toolkit. You can track progress here.

Sample App

The Sample App now has embedded documentation (using the new Markdown control).

The Sample App provide pointers to a few external OSS resources, for example, the newly released Windows SDK for Google Analytics.

It is now available for preview on Xbox One.

UserVoice

The community can now submit and vote for new features on UserVoice.
