Windows 10: "Date modified" is changing in Windows explorer despite no changes being made to files

Hello, I've seen several other folks post about this but it seems to be a persistent issue. When I open a file to read it, but do not make any changes no typing, no saving; I simply close the file again the "date modified" column in windows explorer is automatically updated to today's date. I've tried adding the "date created" column in the folder window as well, and that date is also changing to today's date. This makes things difficult when I'm looking for a specific version of a file I'm a writer and often save multiple drafts of things I'm working on. This is happening with Office fi

The idea is that I have a preview of the file when changing the modified date.
It is a manual change and I take/read it from the file preview.
See below, just as an example.

However, I would like to avoid 1.open file, 2.change modified date, 3. click OK, 4. go to next file
(currently the only way I know),
I seek a tool that has a [Next] button at step 2 (which basically is then the same as step 3, 4 and 1.

Nirsoft offers fine tools, but does not offer file previews AFAIK. BTW They have a more enhanced date changer in bulk file changer.

All methods/tools that I know of are changing the modified date are either:
-starting the modified date change all over for each file
(start - change date - OK - close, next file, start - change date.. etc. i.e. it requires a lot of clicks...)
or
-batch change modified date for multiple files.

Now, image the following scenario:
-a lot of images, scans, of documents that have a date mentioned in the document-
-the modified date is the date they were created/scanned, they are 'wrong' in that sense that they do not match the date IN the document
-having a preview of the document on screen (showing the actual date)
I would like to change the modified date to that actual date (in the document).

The 'click-click-click'-method above would be okay for half a dozen or maybe a dozen files, but it tends to be boring in case of 50, or 100 files.

In such a case you would like to:
- open file, change modified date [Next] change modified date [Next] change modified date ...
all this with a preview of the file.

I have not found a tool that can do this.

File Explorer Date Created and Modified not always correct

Hi,

The File Explorer may have encountered a system conflict that caused this issue. For us to start with initial troubleshooting, we'd like to know more information, kindly answer the following questions:

• Which build and version of Windows 10 do you have?
• In File Explorer, what does it indicate in the Date column? Does it show Date Modified or Date Created? (right click the Date Modified section at the top, which are the ones that has a checkmark?)
• Which troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
