Windows 10: DDR3 vs DDR4

Is there a significant difference between DDR3 ram and DDR4? Would it be worth actually upgrading my motherboard to one that supports DDR4?

I have just bought a new computer with i7 - 5930k. I just wanted to know what is stable overclock for my i7 processor.

The GTX 980ti uses DDR5. There is no DDR5 system RAM, which is what I was inquiring about.

DDR4 is the limit with system RAM.

- I asked because I thought I had read that you could use either DDR4 or DDR3 with Skylake cpu's,

but after checking again I have found that while this may be possible, it can be detrimental to the cpu.

It may have been Haswell-e that could use either DDR3 or DDR4 ?

There are several useful videos on youtube regarding DDR3 vs DDR4. Like this one. Your motherboard supports DDR3.

 

The only place you`ll see a difference is in a benchmark.

In everyday use you won`t even notice the difference.

What speed is your memory, 1866 ??

Just buy faster DDR3, I sold my Trident X 2400 along with my Asus Z87, it was great memory.

Yes there are advantages to DDR4, It's faster but also can use more channels so larger single sticks can be used which saves real estate on the MB and more RAM can be crammed in smaller boards.
Whole system performance improvement may be determined mostly by application/game used but all together can improve performance to some extent because memory speed plays just a small part overall.
The biggest point is that it's on a new platform that has more potentials for upgrade.

Not probably but for sure, that range of processors does not support DDR4.

Looking more like a new build with keeping some stuff. MB + CPU + RAM + GPU = 90% of whole computer, probably price wise too. You'll also get opportunity for faster SSD(s), faster PCIe bus and a bunch of other improvements.

 

Exactly, I knew that, just didn`t want to sound like a know it all, just letting him know it`s a whole new ball game, and buying a new board and cpu just to have ddr4 will be expensive *Smile

He has a 1080 so at least he won`t need a new GPU.

I think what you have now is fine for gaming, just get 32 GB of faster memory, 16 GB is ok but hey why not go all out *Tongue

A new decent board, cpu and memory could easily cost $800 to $1000
