Dead motherboard, new machine, can digital license be transferred (if so, how?)

Windows Pro purchased from MS Store and installed on a HP machine without media, properly registered via digital licensing process. That computer’s motherboard has now failed, making it impossible to boot or otherwise access the info on it. I have purchased a new computer - it’s a Mac, but intel chip allows installation of a Windows bootable partition. All of this works fine except (obviously) I can’t digitally activate the new machine as things stand now. I don’t plan to revive the old machine - not worthwhile, it’s very old. The purchase of Windows Pro shows on my MS store account, so someone there can easily confirm I paid retail for the product. BEFORE I get on the phone and wait however long it takes to get someone to answer this question, does anyone here know: Will Microsoft allow my previous digital license to activate a new install on a completely different machine? I don’t want to waste my time on hold just to be told “No.” I have scoured online sources, but they all presume scenarios slightly different from mine.

    Thank you in advance.

    :)

  2. Digital License after transfer license to new computer

Uninstalling a product key does not deactivate the license, there is actually no deactivation method. You would still need to contact support to actually invalidate the license on the old machine, so it can reactivate on the new machine.

Transferring the license is a step by step process.

First, you either remove the license from the machine by formatting it.

Install it on the new machine.

    Contact chat support, then reactivate.

Where Digital license is handy is when you are still using the machine and reinstall Windows 10 and need to reactivate the license after a significant hardware change, such as a hard disk.

  3. Transfer digital license from old PC to New one.

You would have to first ensure the Digital License is linked to your Microsoft Account. See instructions how to do that. You can then use the Troubleshooter on the new computer after installing Windows 10 to restore the license.

Please note, if your license was upgraded from a OEM preinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 7 license, it is not transferable.

Dead motherboard, new machine, can digital license be transferred (if so, how?)

Is there a tutorial on transfer license to a new machine? :Eula 4b.

Thanks, Shawn, if you need to replace a dying laptop (broken screen, broken hinges, dead touchpad and faulty keyboard) with a desktop then the license activation troubleshooter does not recognise the laptop's MSA linked digital license as being the right "type" for transfer to a desktop replacement:

The EULA does not state a prerequisite device to device "type" for the transfer, and neither does the EULA state that a Microsoft Account is a prerequisite for the ability to transfer under the terms of 4b.

Solved it, possibly not in the most elegant way 10th August 2016.

Took the old disk (40GB IDE!) from the old laptop that had the original clean Windows 7 image restored to it, and installed it in the new desktop. Booted into Windows 7 on that disk, and it reported genuine. Then I let it update drivers, created genuine ticket using GatherOSState.exe from 1511 install disk copied to desktop. Created new Windows 10 partition of 20GB and clean installed 1511x86 onto it. Installed GenuineTicket.xml. Logged in with MSA. Did some upgrades and rebooted a couple of times. Checked activation - activated with a digital license (did not say linked to MS Account, strangely).

Shut down, swapped out old disk, and replaced with disk that had 1607 clean installed on new machine on 9 August, set up as Insider, Fast ring with MSA, not activated yet.

Booted up and the 1607 is activated with a digital license linked to my Microsoft account.

So long Travelmate after 10 years. It was the final straw when I could not upgrade from 10586 with Windows Updates.
