Minding my own business, then out of the blue Critical System Failure. No Explanation. No Reason. No Salvaging.

So as a last resort, I am here,

I was using my computer normally when out of nowhere it shut off. Like a power failure. It is a new computer, best of everything- I spent like $4k in parts, and its all worked correctly for the past few months. It has UPS and its connected. There is no reason for a true power loss.

Of note, at the time I was attempting to make an image of C:

and Event Log shows that Windows was downloading an update

But so far, no indication that theres been a failure.

As an overview to where we are going:

When I return to Windows I log into a temporary profile. All my settings are gone.

Since that time I have tried a number of things

Logging into Admin profile and doing things

    Finishing Windows update

Going to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ Current Version\Profile List and removing .bak from my profile, and deleting the temporary profile at least 10 x.

Doing that and resetting the state setting to 0

    Creating a new user profile

I tried to backup the user directory, but I usually run into some kind of error. I have gotten most of it,

    System Restore- Fails

ChkDsk fails and then succeeds and then fails

    Restoring from a backup fails

    Startup repair fails

Going to a previous version of windows fails

I am no longer able to go into other user accounts for some reason.

Event log shows the following error:

{Registry Hive Recovered} Registry hive (file): '\SystemRoot\System32\Config\BBI' was corrupted and it has been recovered. Some data might have been lost.

Oddly after that, I get two "planned restarts"

The process C:\WINDOWS\servicing\TrustedInstaller.exe (MAINPC) has initiated the restart of computer MAINPC on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Upgrade (Planned)
    Reason Code: 0x80020003
    Shutdown Type: restart
    Comment:

    Followed by

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80073712: 2018-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4338819).

By this point the Temp user exists:

The access history in hive \??\C:\Users\TEMP\ntuser.dat was cleared updating 663 keys and creating 42 modified pages.

But there is no event log entry showing why.

    I am accumulating C:\User\ files

    I have

    myUserName

    TEMP.MAINPC

    TEMP.MAINPC.000

    TEMP.MAINPC.001

    TEMP.MAINPC.002

    TEMP.MAINPC.003

    TEMP.MAINPC.004

    myUserName.MAINPC

The access history in hive \??\C:\Users\TEMP\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\Settings\settings.dat was cleared updating 3 keys and creating 1 modified pages.

A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume C:.

A corruption was found in a file system index structure. The file reference number is 0x2000000014616. The name of the file is "\Users\andyt\eclipse\cpp-photon\eclipse\configuration\org.eclipse.core.runtime\.manager". The corrupted index attribute is ":$I30:$INDEX_ALLOCATION".

A few hours later I see this error:

{Registry Hive Recovered} Registry hive (file): '\??\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1\WINDOWS\System32\config\SYSTEM' was corrupted and it has been recovered. Some data might have been lost.

{Registry Hive Recovered} Registry hive (file): '\??\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1\WINDOWS\System32\config\DRIVERS' was corrupted and it has been recovered. Some data might have been lost.

The file system structure on volume C: has now been repaired.

The file system structure on volume C: has now been repaired.

Volume C: (\Device\HarddiskVolume4) needs to be taken offline for a short time to perform a Spot Fix. Please run "CHKDSK /SPOTFIX" locally via the command line, or run "REPAIR-VOLUME <drive:>" locally or remotely via PowerShell.

    Running sfc /scannow:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

But the log file produced is like 20000 lines long, to long to paste here... which makes it rather useless.

    So,

as far as I can tell- I had an unexplained powerloss, then Windows Update updated on top of that?

Killing everything I know and love and murdering my weekend.

    Anyway,

I am somewhat at a loss to describe whats going on.

There are a slew of errors, I can't recover my user, although it remains accessible. And the worst part is, I am at an utter loss to describe WTF happened. Its like out of the blue, critical failure. And Usually I can recover, but this time, not a damn thing is working. I can reinstall Windows, but its such a pain.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    :)

  2. Is it time for Windows 10 already?

In My humble Opinion this is a backwards step for Micro(insert expletive of choice)
All this will again in my opinion raise the prospect of massive piracy of Micro(insert expletive of choice) Products
When a Hacked Version come to the T****t world it will be siezed upon with glee
no one wants Micro(insert expletive of choice)/NSA /gchq /Adobe to have Control of our Hardware and Bandwidth.

I can only imagine how much longer it took you to type that instead of just saying Microsoft like youre some 12 year old with a grudge and think a business about making money is just in it for the money.

Dear MSFT -(insert expletives and threats to safety here)

Windows 10 Family Safety is blocking my browser!!!

Can you confirm if you are out of the Family Safety feature on your parent's account on this
link? If you've confirmed that you're no longer on the list of monitored child accounts, we suggest deleting the Family Safety folder. Here are the steps:

    • Press Windows key + E on your keyboard.
    • On the address bar, type this address C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Parental Controls and press
      Enter.
    • Delete all contents of the Parental Controls folder.
    • Restart and see if the issue is resolved.

Let us know how it went for you.
