  1. Death in the family but do not have his password to open the computer...

My stepson passed away form a bike accident and we would like to be able to get into his computer and Xbox, we know his E-mail address but do not know his password. We have tried the 3 security questions but with no success. Can Microsoft help us with this problem ? We do not want to do a complete reload as we want to be able to get into his files so we can close anything that can be closed. Please advise relevant documents can be sent as proof if required.Regards

    :)

  2. Family Safety Password Change

    Hi,

First, you need to make sure you are logged into the computer as the Administrator. If you setup your children's account as an Administrator, you should be able to change their passwords. Then follow the steps below:

    • Press Windows key + X and select
      Control Panel.
    • Click on Family Safety and select the child account.
    • On the left navigation pane, select
      Change Password
      .
    • Follow the prompted instructions and check if the password is changed.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

  3. Death of a family member

It seems from reading all these posts that microsoft will not let family access computers or various devices of someone thats passed by helping them with microsoft live passwords saying the users agreed that no one could access there account ect ect

Couldn't there be added an additional ticked box that could be added mentioning access for family after death you could tick so this process could be decided on by individuals instead of microsoft selling a product and if you buy it means you automatically
say no one can access my info even after death?

Death in the family but do not have his password to open the computer...

    Passwords

Thanks for the replies. The situation here I have a computer that belonged to a deceased person. The family would like to save any pictures/videos etc that exist and possibly any software he's bought and installed. The password isn't known but I have approached MS to see if there's any way to apply a new one, and if so would the computer recognise it. I haven't had much luck so far but possibly I could clone the Hard drives and explore files if all else fails. One suggestion was to follow these steps:
Step 1 – From the login screen, click the power icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
Step 2 – Hold the F9 while you click Restart.
    Step 3 – Click ‘Troubleshoot’
Step 4 – Select Reset Your PC.
Step 5 – Click ‘Remove everything’
Step 6 – After your computer reboots, click ‘remove my files’.
    Step 7 – Click ‘Reset ‘
Would this work ? I haven't tried it yet as I don't want to remove any files if it can be avoided. And if I remove everything and re-install windows how would I get the product key ?
