Windows 10: Declining Internet download speed

Hi All,

1st Time poster after frequenting the forums for sometime for assistance and tips.

It's a bit of a weird one, my download speed gradually declines to barely 1mbps but my upload speed stays pretty consistent. My pc rarely turns off or restarts unless windows/software updates require it but it has been pretty rocksteady since the rebuild and fresh reinstall about mid March this year. There have been no major software installs and the only thing that could have changed was my antivirus updating, windows updates last week etc.

I 1st noticed it when I was trying to download a new Nvidia driver update, usually takes seconds but the timer said an hour plus, ran a quick speed test and it showed up 2.3Mbps down and 40+Mbps up, which I thought was strange. My torrent software was running but nothing down or uploading as the torrents I was currently seeding weren't sharing so closed it down, but still no change, done a few ping checks to Sky Sports - Sports News, Transfers, Scores | Watch Live Sport and 2-3 packets were failing everytime. It was first thing in the morning so left it to go to work, when I returned same issue. Restarted the computer and all was well, speeds were back showing 530+Mbps down and 50+ up on a speedtest, and that was with my torrent software and peerblock running.

The following afternoon the same issue, downloads slowed to a crawl, uploads mostly fine and a restart fixed the problem. The only thing I had changed that stuck in my mind was my torrent software had updated, didn't think that could be it, but rolled it back either way to be sure. Monitored the speeds over the next 2 days and it seemed to be fine. Woke up yesterday morning and the same speed issue had kicked in. Now I know it isn't a router issue was all other devices in my house, Dad's laptop, his and my mom's tablets all were fine, my phone speed tested as above basically all around my house. I also have a few other devices connected via powerline adapters and they all test fine, my HTPC downstairs under the main TV is upto date on the same Windows version with ESET and doesn't suffer this problem.

Virus scans come up clean, malwarebytes scans are clear also. Not sure what else I can check/test to narrow it down. I'm running Windows 10 2004 - Build 19041.508.

Slow Download Speed

• I would suggest you to test the speed using any of the speed test website or app to confirm the upload and download speed.
• I also suggest you to reset the wireless router to check if that helps.
  
• You may plug in the Ethernet cable if available and check the speed.

There are several factors that affect your internet speed. A few would be connection speed, network traffic, hardware capability, and type of connection. To help us identify what might be causing the slow internet speed on your laptop, allow me to ask the
following information:

• How's your laptop connected to the network? Is it directly wired to the modem/router or wirelessly connected?
• Were your other computers that were getting 100 Mbps download speed connected to the same network?
• Were there other devices connected to the network while you tried to download?
• Have you tried connecting your laptop to a different network? Did you get the same internet speed?

In the meantime, please run a speed test on your laptop. If the internet speed is slower that your internet package, then you may try to update the drivers of your network adapters to ensure that it's up-to-date. Please check out and follow the steps provided

If you're trying to download while your laptop is wirelessly connected to your network, then kindly check its wireless adapter speed by checking its Wireless Network Connection Status. Follow these steps:

1. Right-click the wireless icon on your system tray, click Open Network & Internet settings, then click
   Wi-Fi.
2. On the right pane, click Change adapter options.
3. Right-click your Wireless Network Connection and click
   Status.

Slow Internet speed on only one computer.

Hi Cody,

Slow internet speed on one of your computer could be due to the following:

• Outdated network adapter driver
• Different Wi-Fi chipset
• Computer processing speed

Make sure that the network driver of your computer(s) are always updated.

We also suggest you to contact your internet service provider for them to check your internet connection speed and give you more information.
