    Thank you...
But this is how it is:

My door lock is broken! I can't get in. I also forgot my key inside!...
You are helping me out to fix the door... but you need the key to do it!
That is the dilemma here *Smile

I think it is time to wrap up this episode of 'Here goes another Windows to dump!' *Wink

A fresh plate to serve nasty!

See you guys with fresh problems...

Thank you for your efforts, your time and good spirit...
    cheers

    Windows 10 Enterprise 2016
I tried to restore to a previously 'created restore point' but it failed (System restore error 0x80070091).
Because I had an Audio Driver issue...
Meantime I fixed my audio card driver problem (reinstall)...
But immediately two irrelevant things are screwed up now:

    • My dedicated 6TB backup drive won't let anything to be written to or deleted from it for no good reason!
    • It started to show error: The Recycle Bin on Y:\ is corrupted...
"Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this Drive?" I click Yes.
But of course, the system won't let me due to problem number 1.
"You need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder."
This drive is a 6 TB data drive and has been serving with no issues about a year now.
And the drive shows no indication of errors or any weaknesses. S.M.A.R.T. stats are all green.
My other system has no such problems with it.
What I have tried so far

    - sfc /scannow: No Problems

    - I did the change the owner to 'Everyone' and included the sub-folders.
It scanned the whole drive and seemed like it completed the task without any errors.
    - I activated the built-in admin account.
takeown /F Y:\ /R It took, of course, forever to scan the drive.
    Results of that scan:
Mostly: SUCCESS (including a bunch of Recycle stuff)
Few: The system cannot find the path specified.
And This"You do not have permissions to read the contents of directory blah..."
"Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you full control? YES!
Scanned twice as much more: success in all entries...

Yet nothing has changed! I still don't have any permission for that Drive but reading permission...
Why now?! Why after trying (and failing) to Restore the system? The second OS that I am building as a workstation has no such problem and the only difference between the one with the problem is that one doesn't have U.A.C.
Any expertise help will be cherished...

    :)

  3. Win10 - How to delete backed up directory and files from FileHistory

On Win10, I created a new folder in C:\Users\Myname\Music\ (let's call it "C:\Users\Myname\Music\Myjunk") and copied LOTS of files into it.

Once FileHistory ran, it backup all these files to its backup destination and filled up my external backup drive (FDedicated backup drive won't let anthing to be written to or deleted f :). I subsequently excluded the C:\Users\Myname\Music\Myjunk directory from FileHistory, but am still faced with a FULL backup drive (FDedicated backup drive won't let anthing to be written to or deleted f :).

How do I delete the backup versions of the files in C:\Users\Myname\Music\Myjunk from my external drive and free up space on F:?

Any help would be a appreciated.

    UPDATE

So two more of my drivers start to behave just like my DATA drive. Again only with this OS (with UAC)
The other system as always has no access issues to any of, now in total; three drives...
During this problem with the original DATA drive, I was using this external drive just fine like every other day...
Prior to this external one, there is no event that could be a cause; like a failed Restore Point or some other error containing a major event.
(And there were another 1TB HDD which was also only readable. But I reformated it for restoring Images anyway...)
Unless this thing is contagious through drives, this is bound to be a Windows dance, no?

The drive probably has bad sectors on it.
Press the Win key+X and choose Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin) type the drive letter of the drive (ie) Y: and press enter. (ie) Y:\> at this prompt type chkdsk /R and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes to Unmount the drive. Check Disk will start and it will take a long time. If it takes overnight or stalls for a long time in one spot, that drive needs to be replaced.

    Hi there
try and boot up a Linux live distro and see if you can read / write to that drive. If you can then at least the HDD hardware is OK so it will probably be a problem with permissions and ownership.

Another solution -- download Free Macrium ISO, make bootable USB using rufus , boot it up, get into command mode and see if you can create a directory on it with good old fashioned DOS commands.

The bootable Macrium has a command mode too so you should be able to access the HDD.

    Cheers

I already know that I can. HDD is okay! As I mentioned it before, I can access the drive without any limitations with my other OS...

  10. (At admin prompt type) diskpart
list disk (identify the right number n)
    select disk n
    attributes disk clear readonly
list volume (identify the right number m)
    select volume m
    attributes volume clear readonly
    exit

    I did the diskpart.
    Nothing has changed...

  12. Run CMD as admin, enter commands:

    cacls y:\
    copy /v nul y:\testfile.txt

    and paste results here.

  14. So we need more info:

    - "My dedicated 6TB backup drive" - is this internal disk/array, external usb/esata, SAN/iscsi storage? Suppose only the first problematic disk, perhaps y:
    - "My other system has no such problems with it." - do you mean parallel/dualboot install of Windows, Windows on other computer, Windows PRE (Macrium Reflect), Linux in dualboot/different computer/live? Which version & build/distro? Osloader GRUB or BCD?
    - Are some related errors/warnings in Event Viewer?

Furthermore, run the following commands at elevated (admin) prompt:

    chkdsk /f y:

    diskpart
    list disk
    sele disk m
    deta disk
    list part
    sele part n
    deta part
    list volu
    sele volu o
    deta volu
    exit

where m, n, o are numbers of affected physical disk, partition on disk, and volume.

    Paste the whole output here.

All of my drives are internal.
It started with Y but every other day when I reboot the system, a new one joins. As a result, now I have three drives that allow only read access and apparently, I also have right to change the 'owner', which doesn't do any good!
I have two system drives (dual boot) One my workstation system to be; offline (No UAC) which has no permissions problem with any of the drives. And this one, online, with UAC and with the permissions disease...
    Windows Enterprise 2016
No errors except corrupted Recycler Bin for drive Y. And Because it doesn't let me delete anything, consequently, I can not fix that particular little problem...
I already did the chckdsk on Y. It found nothing...
I also did scannow and that also didn't bring any errors...As the previous request failed, I don't see how "chkdsk /f y:" would have been allowed?I don't have sufficient privilages... :/

    Thank you
