Defender: Disable real time; keep scheduled and on demand

I just upgraded to Win 10 (RTM build). I have disabled the AV (Defender, why did they go back to the old name?) real time protection because I do not run it, never did and have never gotten a virus (and I've had a computer for 30 years).

I was able to disable real time scans by turning on the Group Policy's *Disable Defender Policy*. But this disables the application entirely. **Is it possible to use this profile** (which I used with Win 7's Security Essentials) with Win10 Defender:

    - Real time scan off
    - Scheduled scans (2AM) active
    - On demand (shell integration right
    click) scans active

    ?

**Or do I have to install a 3rd party scanner**? I already run MBAM, MBAE and EMET (those are scanning in real time, as their impact on performance is minimum), but I would really like to avoid a 3rd party AV.

    TIA

    :)

  2. Is it true that if an anti-virus program or any anti-malware program is running, then Defender will no longer operate as it 'normally' does.

When another AV app registers with the Windows OS as an antivirus provider, the OS automatically disables Windows Defender in order to prevent a conflict between the real-time components of the two AV apps. However, Defender is no longer disabled
completely when you install a third-party AV app. Both the Windows Defender UI and the
Windows Defender Security Center now provide the option to enable Defender in a new
Limited Periodic Scanning mode, where it can run right alongside your third-party AV app – but with its real-time protection disabled. The Microsoft documentation for Limited Periodic Scanning is very confusing, but if you just enable it, you’ll
see that virtually all of Defenders features and functions are still available in this new
on-demand mode – including the Command Line Utility. The only thing missing is the
real-time protection, which would otherwise cause a conflict with your third-party AV app.

So this all works on the same principle that allows third-party malware-removal tools to be used in conjunction with Defender. These apps also avoid any potential conflicts by being strictly limited to “on-demand” scanning, or scheduled
on-demand scanning (periodic scanning) – they don’t use any kind of real-time protection
(on-access scanning). But having a built-in second line of defense when you're using a third-party AV app is really a great option, especially now that Windows Defender’s detection rates are on the upswing:

Enable the limited periodic scanning feature in Windows Defender AV

Windows Defender (msmpeng.exe) huge memory usage + commit size making PC unsuable until restart

    Hi,

I cannot think of any changes I have made recently that would trigger the issue.

I'm not using any third-party antivirus. The real-time protection for Windows Defender is disabled (I disabled it a long time ago). It only runs scheduled or on demand.

The error messages I receive vary between applications. Chrome and Opera give "Out of Memory" errors when loading pages or new tabs. Some applications start crashing without detailed error messages. I they are all symptoms of the system running out of
    memory.
