    Defender settings

    hi all,
    here's an odd question.

i run another 3rd party anti-malware software on my win 10. 10 will then disable Defender. however, i want to run both, but in this fashion, which is how it is now. i manually turn on Defender via registry settings but disable the realtime feature, i then create a daily task in scheduler to run MpCmdRun.exe to get sig updates, then a weekly task to run MpCmdRun.exe to do a scan type 2.

seems to work fine, but what i have seen thus far is on a very clean/new system.

so my 3rd party anti malware is realtime and does daily full scan of system so i expect it to catch something before Defender runs, but what exactly happens in this scenario:

lets say i get a file that in Defender sigs is bad but 3rd party not yet have a sig for it, so the file sits on my system from now until Defender runs, but, lets say on fri 3rd party gets the sig but 3rd party next full scan will not run until after the Defender scan on sat. when Defender reads the bad file the 3rd party software will also catch it because the file is being read by the 3rd party as Defender reads it.

so what exactly happens? does 3rd party nab the file while at same time Defender flags it but cannot quarantine it?

the idea for running both is to have two types of anti malware running, but i am trying to understand this odd scenario than can occur.

    your thoughts?

    :)

Use one or the other - not both.

What is the third party product you are using?

Webroot, which can run fine with other anti malware programs (so Webroot says).
why do you say "not both"? whats the technical reason not to use both?
and for clarity, Defender realtime is disabled, i only use Defender to do a manual scan weekly. Webroot is realtime with daily scan.

Here's why Why Using Multiple Antivirus Programs is a Bad Idea |

They will try to kill each other. Because antivirus programs search your system for programs that are monitoring and sending information about your system, a competing antivirus program that is monitoring and sending information about your system tends to look like a virus, so it will attempt to block it and remove it.

They will fight over viruses. When an antivirus program encounters a virus, it removes it and quarantines it. But if a competing antivirus program sees that quarantined file and wants to remove and quarantine it in accordance with its own objectives, then it will repeatedly send reports and notifications about this virus that it is detecting, even though it is no longer actually a threat to your system. If you don’t want to continually get bogus warning messages, this will be a problem for you.

They will sap your power. Antivirus programs use a lot of your system memory to conduct system scans and other related operations. If you have two of these operating simultaneously, your system’s effectiveness can be greatly diminished or completely wiped out altogether, and without any benefit, since the two are performing redundant operations.

sap power? hah, maybe for pentium days. this system is good i5 and 32GB ram on fast Samsung SSD. and, Defender is only a manual scan weekly.
so the worst case scenario is that Webroot sees a item in Defender quarantine?

If you'd just like an occasional Defender-equivalent scan from MS, pull up cmd prompt as admin, type in MRT (Malicious Software Removal Tool)....

(I'd be rather shocked if Defender/MRT ever found something that MBAM or Webroot could not....) *Smile

doesnt running MRT fall into same question i have?
MRT is infrequent updates, while Defedner gets frequent updates.

who's to say a Defender sig will not be ready or better than 3rd party?
