Windows 10: Defender virus alert won't go away

Here's the scenario.I am doing a massive clean-out of the attic and found a bunch of old MS-DOS games on floppy disks.I wanted to see if they still worked, so connected a USB floppy drive to my Windows 11 PC.One of them seems to have been infected with a virus at some point, but I'm fairly certain it's no danger on a 64bit OS.However, Windows won't stop telling me the threat is present even after having long removed the disk/drive. It keeps telling me there's a threat on A:\ but there is no A:\ any more.Trying to perform any of the options clean, quarantine etc. does nothing.Performing a new

virus alert

defender finds a virus, quarantined the virus. I remove all the quarantined viruses. the threat alert pm the bottom right of the screen slices over with the same virus alert. I remove the quarantined virus.. the alert alerts again. this keeps repeating.
the virus is "Bruser modifier Win 32/Polteci

Minitool Partition Wizard Triggers Defender Virus Alert

I just tried to upgrade to Partition Wizard v11 from MiniTool's web site, The file downloads OK but triggers a serious virus alert in Defender (see below).

I suspect this is a false positive but I've no wish to test that hypothesis.

 

do I need to get a virus protection and not count on defender

That depends on your own preferences and habits.

Windows 10 comes with in-built AV Windows Defender.
