Windows 10: defragment the C drive is taking over 24 hrs

I was having issues with the speed of my Dell laptop HDD. I ran the de fragment operation and it was going really slow, like 8 hours to get to 45% complete on the first pass. I came back about an hour later and it had been restarted and was repairing the drive note said could take over an hour to complete it has been on this screen for over 16 hours now. not sure what is going on...

Defragment and Optimize Drives Problem

  as

Defragment C Drive

Defragging a drive that is almost full will do no good whatsoever. You must remove something. Likely big things.

If you have a partitioned drive (big mistake), backup everything on the 2nd partition. Delete everything in that partition. Extend the C partition.

If you just don't have the space and you really need it, replace the drive. it is not that expensive and although it takes a lot of time to do the re-install, it will result in a vastly improved computer. Follow the step by step you will find here:

Windows Defrag

When running defrag, there is a drive listing for Windows RE Tools. It shows as a solid state drive and that it has never been defragged. It will not optimize. Clicking on it does nothing. Any suggestions?
