Delete Volume option is greyed out for USB Flash drive on Windows 10

If you’re unable to delete volume on USB flash drive with Windows 10 built-in tool Disk Management because the Delete Volume option is greyed out for a USB Flash drive on your device, the solutions provided in this post are intended to help you resolve this issue.

Delete Volume option is greyed out for USB Flash drive

If you’re faced with this issue, you can try either of our recommended solutions below to resolve the issue.

    1. Use DiskPart
    2. Use 3rd-party partition software

Let’s take a look at the description of the process involved concerning each of the listed solutions.

    1] Use DiskPart

To use DiskPart to delete Volume on USB flash drive on your Windows 10 device, do the following:

    • Press Windows key + R to invoke the Run dialog.
    • In the Run dialog box, type cmd and hit Enter to open Command Prompt.
    • In the command prompt window, type the command below and hit Enter.

    diskpart
    • Next, type the command below and hit Enter:

    list disk

The command will list all the hard drives on your computer.

    • Next, type the command below and hit Enter:

    select disk 3

Here, disk 3 is the flash drive plugged into the system. Be sure to select the number that corresponds to the flash drive inserted in your system.

    • Next, type the command below and hit Enter:

    list partition

The command will list all the partitions on the USB flash drive.

    • Next, type the command below and hit Enter:

    select partition 1

In this case, we assume partition 1 is the partition we want to delete. Make sure to select the number that corresponds to the partition on your flash drive.

    • Finally, type the command below and hit Enter:

    delete partition

After DiskPart successfully deletes the selected partition, type exit and hit Enter to close Command Prompt.

    2] Use 3rd-party partition software

This solution requires you to use any third-party partition software like the EaseUS Partition Master software to delete a partition.

Once you have downloaded and installed EaseUS Partition Master, you can follow the instructions below to delete a partition/volume:

    • Power on your Windows 10 device.
    • Plug in the USB flash drive.
    • Launch the EaseUS Partition Master.
    • Once it loads up, right-click the USB flash drive and select Delete.
    • Click OK when it asks you for confirmation.
    • On the top-left corner, click Execute Operation.
    • Click Apply button.
    • Your system will restart to begin the operation.

    Hope this helps!

  2. Cannot Delete Partition on USB Flash Drive on Windows 10

    Good day Microsoft Community Members,

I recently had to do a memtest. The installation of the memtest software on a USB flash drive created two small partitions (49MB and 99MB) and left 7.31 GB unallocated.

Now, after the memtest, I want to revert the flash drive to one single volume but could not. When I right-clicked on the two small volumes, the function 'Delete Volume' is slightly greyed. Nothing happens when I click on it. The other functions to Extend
and Shrink Volume are also greyed.

When I tried to Format, it would only format to its current volume size of 49 MB. The Format button for the 99 MB volume is greyed and not working.

Appreciate guidance on how to resolve this. Thank you.

help. USB drive isn't assigned a drive letter.

Any usb flash drive I plug into my computer isn't assigned a drive letter. The physical drive shows in the "safely remove hardware" but it doesnt show up in disk management. I have tried to populate the volume thru the safely remove hardware properties window and it does pop up in the list but it doesn't stay there. This isn't a format or assign a letter problem. It's more complicated then that. Maybe one of the services needed for usb drive management was disabled? Suggestions needed. btw external usb harddrives work fine.

    USB Flash drive made bootable

    Hi Nelson,

Check if there is any slide switch on the side that provides write protection. It show's a closed and open lock on each side. We suggest to follow these steps below:

    • Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port.
    • Click Start, type devmgmt.msc in the Search textbox and press Enter.
    • Find Disk Drives and expand it.
    • Find the USB flash drive you want to format, and double-click it. It opens the
      Properties dialog box.
    • Click Policies tab.
    • By default, the Optimize for quick removal option selected, switch it to Optimize for performance and then press
      OK.
    • Now open Computer. Right click on the USB Flash Drive and select Format. The Format dialog box now appears.
    • Select NTFS in the File System field.
    • Press Start and wait while the process will be completed.

You can also connect the USB drive on a different computer and try formatting.

Let us know how it goes.
