Windows 10: Delete Windows.old Folder in Windows 10

Discus and support Delete Windows.old Folder in Windows 10 in Windows 10 Tutorials to solve the problem; Can I keep windows 10 from deleting it after a month or something like that?     Hello Max,

    Not that I'm aware of.

    It would be best to create an image backup of the previous Windows before upgrading to restore it with.

    The Go back to previous Windows feature is just for a temporary backup in case there was a problem with the upgrade, or one didn't care for Windows 10.

    I tried this but it ended with a corrupted MBR so my computer stopped working. Have it fixed but now I am hesitating to use a Linux option like

    I upgraded an old notebook from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and found this Windows.old folder with 30.2 GB of disk space!

    Gary you hit the nail with a hammer. After an upgrade some bits of Windows.old are owned by SYSTEM user and cleanmgr will not delete them. If you take ownership it works fine.

    hey guy....just use ccleaner and jus check delete old windows installation and hit run cleaner
    and ccleaner will do the rest

    Mine was almost that big. 26GB and the disk cleanup method took care of it.

    Hi Shawn,

    We meet again. Unlocker deletes everything in Windows.old Folder except for the file IntcDAud.sys. One can rename and move the file through Unlocker but can't delete it (says file being used by some other Program) even on reboot. Maybe if UEFI Bios are temporarily changed into Legacy it might delete on reboot but I haven't tried it.

    I attempting to copy that folder and files to my other backup F: drive, and it had many data files which would not copy to it, so I just delete that fold on my Drive F:

    Would there normally be file in the "windows-old" folder that could not be copied. ?

    My up grade to windows 10 seems to all be OK, or at least everything I have used seems to be OK.

    If you don't need anything from the Windows.old folder, then it's safe to delete using an option in the tutorial. *Smile
