Windows 10: Deleted System Profile Desktop

I have a 5 year old Lenovo ThinkPad X230.

Lately I was running into severe issues where the system lags when doing anything, such as clicking on the Start Menu, closing a window...anything.

Opening Task Manager, it showed Disk usage at 100%.

After researching online, I tried multiple resolutions including: ran AV scan, deleted Adobe, turned off Skype, changed Chrome settings, disabled Superfetch and some other tips I can't remember.

For awhile it seemed to resolve the issue...only to come back with a vengeance.

Going into Resource Monitor, it seemed as if svchost.exe was the culprit.

I disabled about 50 of these 1 by 1 until eventually the disk usage reverted back to normal: 0%.

The problem was, when I attempted to restart, the system took a very long time to even get to the login screen.

When I finally got there (20 to 30 minutes) and logged in, I received the following error message

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet, then try agian. If the location can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted."

It then loaded a blank/generic desktop without any of my files/apps.

Would someone please suggest what I could do to restore my old desktop/profile?

Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild


Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done *Smile I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.

windows 10 deleted my desktop files

Step 1 - I upgraded to Win 10 and lost all my files on Desktop.

Step 2 - Found the files in Network - USers- Desktop

copied all files again to desktop.

Step 3- Restarted my machine again and lost desktop files again.

Step 4 - As suggested did the following as listed below but dont find my files.

• Press “Windows + E”, open This PC/Computer
• Open Local Disc C, open Windows.old
• Click on Users, select your User name
• Go to desktop folder

Cant find my files. Why is Win 10 deleted files again and again from Desktop ?.
