Windows 10: Deletion of old contacts in the Windows 10 People App

I recently asked the following question:


I am in a constant fight with the People app. It seems to me that this app needs a major overhaul. Two weeks ago, most of my contacts disappeared except some very old ones. Why and How? Absolutely no idea. After some consultation without a result or resolution, I decided to reenter all the contacts that I have. I have an old legacy program with many contacts, but it was not well maintained on my side. At least, it helped to get some contacts back.


My question is: Why can't I delete old contacts from the app. Right clicking on such a contact shows a pop-up menu, where the the "Delete" is greyed out rep. unusable. Editing such a record brings up response box that says:


Add details?


You can't change Recent contacts info on your device, but you can add details that will show up on their control card.


Add Cancel


If I change something, it will be added. When saved, it appears on the details box. Now right clicking on that contact allows from pop-up menu the "Delete". Doing this brings up the old contact with the unaltered details. This does not make sense!!!


Is there a solution to 1) getting rid of that "greyed out "Delete"? Is there a solution to avoid that message about "Add Details"?


Generally, I am confused by this logic, if it is one at all.

Deleting contacts from Windows 10


When you say Windows Mail Live are you referring to Mail app or Windows Live Mail?

I suggest you to try the steps provided below and check if it helps.

• Open Windows Live Mail.
• Press Ctrl + 3 using your keyboard. Right-click on the contact to delete it if it is a single contact.
• Highlight all contacts by pressing Ctrl + A.
• Click Delete located on the Ribbon bar.
• Click OK when you see the message These contacts will also be deleted from Hotmail, Messenger, and other Windows Live services.

After following the steps above, all your contacts that you have manually added to your account will be deleted however, contacts coming from third-party sites such as Facebook will not be deleted unless you remove Facebook from your account.

For Mail app:

Open People app then delete the contact.

Deleted Skype Contacts Still in the People App

Hi Mateja,

From your issue description, I understand that you want to remove Skype contacts from People app. Not to worry, I am here to help you with this issue.

As an initial troubleshooting step, I suggest you to hide Skype contacts by applying filter and check if this helps.

Follow these steps:

• Open People app and click on Settings.
• Now click on Filter contact list.
• Uncheck Skype from list and click on Done.

You may also delete contacts manually.

Right click on contact name one by one and click on Delete.

People App showing deleted contacts

First of all, I want to clarify that I don't have linked any external account to microsoft account. So, please, don't tell me that the contacts may come from external linked accounts. The only thing I have linked is Skype,
because now we are forced to link both Skype to Microsoft.

My problem is that I want to delete all my contacts from both Skype and from the People app. I want to to this because I want to import a new list of contacts (most of my contacts are old and out of date and it is easier to delete and import).
From Skype, I am done deleting all contacts.

BUT, from the web-based "People" application I can still see some contacts and I cannot delete those contacts because are listed as contacts coming from Skype. These are about 20 contacts that I cannot delete.

Worst of all, in the Windows 10 "People" application I still can see about 80 contacts that I cannot delete because are listed as coming from "Skype contact list".

This behavior of the people app is a mess. Every application (Skype, web-based People app, and windows 10 people app) shows a different list.
I repeat: I cannot delete the contacts because there is nothing to delete from Skype but both web and desktop based People apps list the contacts as coming from Skype.

Please, FIX my account and delete all my contacts. I don't care what contacts are there, just delete all them so that I can import an updated list. Don't tell me that I must delete them from Skype because, as I have already said, there is
nothing left in Skype.
