    I just purchased a used Dell Latitude E6400 on eBay.

    It came without a hard drive, so I put in a brand new hard drive.


    The laptop had a valid Windows 7 Home Premium license, so I installed it and validated it using the product key located on the COA.


    Then I upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 Home Premium.


    But I wasn't able to update the BIOS from A11 to A34 (latest version) or even A20.

    I even ran Compatibility Troubleshooter.


    The Windows registry modification suggested elsewhere was not helpful.

    Application error return 0x00000406 during BIOS update

    I have a Dell Latitude E6400 running Windows10 with an Intel Core2 processor, 64bit, Bios A11. When I try to upgrade my Bios to A34 I get "Application Error Return: 0x00000406". I have rebooted with same result. No help from Dell support. They tell me( after
    waiting in their que for an hour) it should work . Any help here?

    I just got this same exact error message a couple of days ago but using upgrade Bios A26. With a corporate Dell Latitude E4300 running on a clean updated Windows 10 Pro (from Win7) with
    an Intel Core2 processor, 64bit, original Bios A11 as well. Just picked-up this laptop on EBAY last week from a laptop vendor so before being active on it I wanted to do all the upgrades and updates on it first. Nothing on this on Dell support sites at
    all.

    Anyway were you able to find a fix for the "Application error return 0x00000406" as of yet?

    If not, how's is your laptop running? as far as I can tell I don't see any issues at all but running the .EXE file again I still get this message.

    I was able to update the BIOS using a bootable FreeDOS USB flash drive

    I got the image file [ FreeDOS-1.1-USB-Boot.img ] from FreeDOS 1.1 USB Boot Image – Do Something Every Day

    I used Rufus to create the bootable USB flash drive.

    Copy E6400A34.exe to the bootable USB flash drive.

    Boot from the USB flash drive which gives you C:\ prompt

    Type E6400A34 at the DOS prompt.

    BIOS is updated.

    Booted into Window 10.

    I am not sure why I was getting this 0x00000406 error.

    I had another E6400 that had no problems running the E6400A34.exe in Windows 10.
