    Dell Desktop suddenly won't read SD card and with USB reader


    The internal card reader all of a sudden stopped working, I tried my SanDisk ImageMate 5 in 1 USB reader in all of my 4 USB ports and same problem. The PC shows the reader but asks for a card. I had done a bit of research on this site and one suggested looking in Device Manager for the SD driver but when I followed the instructions there was none. My PC is a Dell XPS. Dell says I need a new driver and suggested I buy a new PC from them. If that is the case why does not even a USB reader work?

    Dell U3011 SD card reader U/S after fall creators update

    I have a Dell U3011 monitor which has an SD card reader. Since I installed the fall creators update (Win10 x64 Pro), the card reader is no longer functional. I've tried multiple SD cards, and none of them show as a drive. When I look in Device Manager, under USB Controllers I see "Unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".

    The PC is dual boot with Ubuntu, and when I boot Ubuntu the SD card reader works, so the problem is not with the hardware. Any suggestions on a fix? I use the card reader fairly frequently.

    You Cannot Read The *new* High Density Sd Cards In A Standard Sd Card Reader. The Warning Is All Over The Packaging. Full Stop.

    SD Card Readers not working

    Hello Benital,

    I have had this same problem and at first your suggestion worked (one time). After that, I never get the so called "action center notice". Even after a restart, with inserting the SD card into the built-in reader, once the OS is up and running for a couple
    minutes.

    I too have tried to upgrade the drivers, using my Dell computer's "Command | Update" function. But, to no success.

    Question, within the Device Manager, how can I even find the SD card reader? I do not see it listed, but I do see a large number of USB devices. They show up as either "Generic USB Hub", "USB Composit Device" or "USB Root Hub", even several
    "Intel 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller". Which one would be my SD Card reader?
