Windows 10: Dell Inspiron 16 microphone and audio problem

I have recently purchased a dell Inspiron 16 plus and have an issue with microphone and audio since the beginning.I contacted dell support but nothing helped.The audio problem is that I hear the distorted sound quite often. It's not constant but I always hear on start up sound as well.The microphone is not working well. When I test it, it is only 5 to 10 % of performance.I did uninstall and update the audio drivers. Even reset my PC and update all BIOS and drivers I could find through dell support assist and on Dell's website.The dell support is a kind of hit and miss and some of them told me

@Stu - thanks for the detailed steps. I followed these last night and audio worked perfectly on my Samsung HDTV monitor. However, this morning audio is gone again, and performing the same steps again (even though the settings were already correct) doesn't
restore audio.

The only audio options that work for me after the upgrade to Windows 10 are: (1) headphones in the analog audio jack, or (2) external speakers connected to the rear panel. Sound from the connected monitor are not really working.

I'm so confused as to who is actually controlling the audio - there are:

• DELL Audio drivers for the Inspiron PC
• Intel Audio drivers
• Realtek Audio drivers
• Microsoft Audio drivers (?)

No wonder there's a problem...seems to me they are fighting for control of the audio device!

Hey Greg thanks for getting back to me so quickly, I went through your steps and ended up setting up Windows again (step 13). Currently my audio is working way better but it says that my Hd audio requires further installation and I believe is what is preventing
me from my laptop registering a microphone. Any suggestions?
